been listening to a lot of Van Halen lately… 1984 came out when I was 9 years old and my neighbor one afternoon said ( in his thick Mississippi drawl ) “come over dude I got something to play ya”.. his older brother had just gotten the vinyl and was out mowing lawns for a few hours so we snuck into his room and my buddy put the needle down on side two.. hot for teacher kicks in and my young mind was blown.. i couldn’t believe what I was hearing.. I remember walking home and being in a daze like what just happened?.. later that night, being the MTV kid I was, I saw for the first time the hot for teacher video.. I couldn’t believe it! it all suddenly came to life! And there was Alex being the coolest.. his patterns, fills and most importantly Feel were so incredible to me.. that and the Roto Toms!.. I was instantly obsessed and I asked my mom the next day to please buy me a pair of silver mirror aviators and a leather jacket.. she did! Thank you mom I love you! Fast forward 20 years and I find myself in a NYC alley with David Lee Roth and two close friends but that’s another story.. but thank you Alex for being an absolute genius player.. no one will ever play like you.. 🙏🏻

yesterday was my 51st birthday and it made me think about a lot.. as I see the lines in my face and the gray in my beard.. each line a story.. many long nights on the floor of a van having just played a show in front of 10 people in the middle of nowhere, no plans for the future but feeling absolutely free.. many nights on a tour bus playing arenas and tv shows and feeling totally alone.. staying up till the sun comes up on a rooftop in Brooklyn.. putting my body through the ringer with alcohol and cigarettes.. quitting both of those.. losing love, finding love… all of these stories are now lines on my face and I am honored to have them and grateful to still be alive…

thinking of my boy Buddy today.. he was such a sweet soul and an ambassador love for his breed.. to say we were bonded was an understatement and I know he sent me my new girl Daisy Mae to watch over me..
