I can say with upmost certainty, Tanzania is forever a part of me. I don’t have the words to articulate the emotions I felt or the sensations I had, but I can tell you they were impactful. And although words cannot express my time in Tanzania, I will continue to share my experience until my very last breath. The mere act of writing this feels like an obstacle solely because I don’t even know where to begin.

Going into this adventure, I knew I would gain an abundance of knowledge and gratitude. But I’ve returned home with far more than I anticipated. It’s one thing to “know” the livelihood and culture of a developing country. But being immersed in it is another. Walking through villages, listening to stories, or just exchanging a smile will change the entirety of your perception.

During this time there were two words that were constantly weighing on my conscious:
Right. and Privilege.
As humans we want care to be a right, but there are circumstances where being cared for is a privilege. Access to education & housing is a moral right, yet a legal privilege. Having community is the privilege of being supported and respected. The ability to take physical risks is a privilege, because adequate healthcare is not always a right.
I don’t want to give the implication that some people are inferior or there are people who require pity, simply because they live differently. My end all be all goal is to say: be curious. Be curious about not only the people around you, but everywhere. Be curious about new hobbies & skills. Be curious about your physical abilities. Be curious about a topic you’ve never learned before. Be curious about the small things. Be curious about the big stuff. Be curious about yourself & your family. Be curious while you can.
