Sometimes I wonder what it is that I’m actually chasing.

I say I want a beam of light in this world that is meant for me. I want a stage that lights up for me. I want people who come because of me. It sounds ambitious, maybe arrogant. But it’s a deeper kind of longing. I want to know whether someone like “me” can truly be seen.

On a stage in America, I played Nüwa — the goddess who mends the sky, who creates humanity, who shapes a world in mythology. She isn’t a familiar Western god. She doesn’t have golden hair or blue eyes. She wasn’t written into their childhood stories. And yet there I was, speaking in two languages, using my face, my body, to tell her story. In that moment, I suddenly understood what that beam of light really meant.

This morning I tied my hair high and tight, the way my mom used to do for me when I was little. It wasn’t just styling. It was inheritance. A quiet way of saying that this face, this language, this culture deserve to be illuminated too.

I stood on stage and spoke Chinese. Someone cried. And I realized the light wasn’t only on me. It was touching something long pressed down inside them, memories, language, a mother’s voice, homesickness.

I want to become the person I imagine, not because I’m certain she exists. In fact, it’s because I’m not sure. She is sensitive yet sharp, beautiful yet strong, rooted in her own culture yet heard by the world. I don’t want to become her to prove anything to anyone. I want to become her to know that if I try, she is not a fantasy. She is me.

Maybe the light won’t always be mine. Maybe some people won’t truly come for me. Maybe expectations will fall short, stages will close, applause will fade. But one thing won’t change: in the moment I stand there, I am real. And so is the woman I imagine. And I can, again and again, relight that beam myself. 🌟🎉💖💌
