french_dispatch_musee_portatif_cc_mfa_010.projx

The French Dispatch — Musée Portatif was special opportunity to collaborate with @izeri_designs this past spring semester [23]. It was such a rewarding experience coming together to find a way to combine our design styles and creative interests into one deliverable object, or maybe a few I should say. This project draws visual inspiration from Marcel Duchamp's "La Boîte-en-Valise," which is translated as "The Box in a Valise." Duchamp conceived this as a practical method to present his most significant works to collectors, thereby eliminating the need for them to travel to view his dispersed artworks in person. Guided by the concept of portability, our goal was for the briefcase to contain a collection of interactive learning tools for the audience to interact with. These tools would complement the notecards, which emphasize four fundamental stylistic we felt are crucial to any Wes Anderson film: symmetry, color, perspective, and objects.

sunbeam_branding_cc_008.projx

Hello everyone!!
I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted here but that’s changing real soon. There’s so much I can’t wait to post from this past year. I recently completed the first year of my MFA in Graphic Design and accepted a grad assistantship with Boston University’s Feld Center for Career & Alumni Engagement. As a way to keep myself accountable I want to share two intentions for the summer — first is completing my portfolio website and second is deciding/researching what my thesis will be for the spring.

But for now, I'd like to present a studio project I worked on during the fall semester of 2022. The project allowed us the freedom to choose an area or specialty of design that interested us the most. I got the idea for this project after coming across the brand identity created by Studio Lowrie for the Sundance Film Festival in 2020. The festival's visual identity revolves around a set of symbols representing the light beam from a film projector. This sparked my imagination, and I began to think about what it would be like if Sundance had its own music festival.

For this project, I drew inspiration from Sundance's 2020 branding and developed a concept for a music festival called the Sunbeam Music Festival, scheduled for March 2027. The lineup consists of my most listened to and liked artists and bands on Spotify. The festival's iconography symbolizes a radiant sun, and the color palette is derived from heat signatures on weather radar maps. I wanted the festival's identity to be playful and modern, resonating with the free-spirited audience it aims to attract. I've included the weekend lineup poster, day lineup posters, stickers, and tickets/wristbands. I understand that there's much more to branding an entire music festival, but this project gave me a small taste of what it would be like. I'm grateful for the opportunity to design something I'm passionate about. Who knows, this might not be the last we see of SMF27!

Let me know in the comments, would you buy tickets??

pinhole_photos_cc_002.projx

We kicked off our next photo lab project by crafting our own pinhole cameras from a box of shoebox size, an aluminum can, and a generous amount of duct tape. The resulting images possess a distinct, dreamy quality that perfectly matches my artistic style. As we gradually familiarize ourselves with the darkroom and its various chemical intricacies, we're beginning to comprehend how they impact the ultimate outcome of the developed photographs. Stay tuned to witness my continued manipulation and recontextualization of these images and many others for the upcoming final project.

interrupt_poster_cc_007.projx

At the conclusion of my fall semester in 2022, I completed a typography project where I was tasked with gathering a range of assets that exemplified various formal design approaches. With these resources, I created a poster that was both straightforward to follow yet also featured deliberate disruptions within its composition. This project encouraged me to venture into a design aesthetic that I had previously steered clear of — maximalism —which presented its own set of difficulties, but ultimately proved surmountable. As you can see, this poster diverges from my previous work, but nonetheless possesses its own charm.

visual_histories_cc_006.projx

The creation of this typography poster involved the use of both historical and modern images of design. The task was to bring together the various aspects of art and design that have influenced our personal design approach, and present them in a clear and easy-to-comprehend format that includes both text and images. To label the visual content on the poster, I chose a straightforward numbering system that matches the corresponding numbers in the list.

Contemplating the vast amount of visual information that I encounter in my daily life and how it shapes my design work, I became interested in exploring my own visual biases and preconceptions. What captures my visual attention? Is it based on color, shape, cultural significance, or simply its aesthetic appeal? This curiosity led me to delve into the research conducted by Marx Wartofsky of Boston University, which focuses on the evolution of the human visual system from both biological and sociological perspectives.

Photograms and test strips from the first Photo Lab class of the semester, also known as "cameraless photographs". This technique involves placing an assortment of objects directly onto a light-sensitive material, such as photographic paper, and exposing it to light using an enlarger. This project served as an introduction to the darkroom image-making technique. Can you spot the 👁️?

catalogue_of_design_books_cc_005.projx

This was the first editorial project of Grad Type 2, we were instructed to first select 15-20 books from a list of design books provided by the professor and 15-20 more from our own collections. The objective was to use an existing typographic listing system or create your own that effectively logs and organizes the books selected. I took inspiration from 90s Chinese fashion catalogs which separated articles of clothing into gridded boxes with the brand name at the top, followed by other details like item type, material, country of origin, and price. Using this style I wanted to translate the catalogs’ framed borders and cut-out images in a more contemporary way. To differentiate between books from the professor’s list of books and my own, I highlighted the columns in beige that come from my collection. I used the motif of price tags to reflect my past experiences in retail where I remember the process of tagging each product individually. The tags had an analog and tactile quality that I wanted to convey in each book entry. Additionally, I included a collectible poster for the viewer to remove and display.

mega_diagram_cc_004.projx

This 40 x 60 in. poster combines elements from six redesigned historical diagrams. Infographics represent pieces of information, data, or knowledge that support body information in a visual way. When researching potential diagrams to use for this project I knew I wanted to find visually rich illustrations that stood out and wanted to take on the challenge of transforming detailed illustrations into minimalist figures that communicate the same thing.

The second part of the project was to merge, or should I say aggregate, all six redesigned posters + additional supplemental text provided by @christophersleboda , to form a mega-diagram. The focus was not on the content itself but on how the visual forms interact and flow together. The goal is to create a dimensional, complex and engaging composition that leads viewers’ eyes through the design, which I feel I managed to accomplish. Conceptually, I wanted my mega-diagram to feel cosmic and imaginative, showing the central figure’s journey up the stairs to the center of the universe. This is definitely one of my proudest posters, demonstrating how far I’ve come with my design craft and compositional skills over the semester.
