CCCA Yixing @ccca.yixing | Artist: Jacinto David Muñoz (Argentina)

Clay is a geological fragment written by the earth, carrying the primordial visions of nature imagined by different civilizations. When the untamed spirit of Latin America meets the subtle restraint of the East, a dialogue across continents begins.

👨‍🎨 About the Artist:

Jacinto David Muñoz (Argentina) is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC). His artistic practice spans painting, drawing, ceramic sculpture, metal installations, and murals.

He is known for creating fantastical anthropomorphic creatures that resist classification—neither entirely human nor purely animal. Rooted in the native landscapes and folklore of South America, these figures explore the relationship between human beings and their natural environment through a language that is both playful and profound.

His works have been exhibited internationally, and he has participated in numerous ceramic artist residencies across different countries.

During his residency at CCCA Yixing, he continued developing his distinctive sculptural language through an encounter with local Yixing clay. Bringing the fantastical imagination of Latin America into the material, he created anthropomorphic beings that blur the boundaries between species.

Existing somewhere between human and animal, these figures reflect his ongoing exploration of nature, mythology, and identity.

For Muñoz, sculpting with clay is an experiment in moving freely between the local imaginaries of different civilizations.

Very intuitively, we started to throw the forms we were individually working on- on a small scale in Yixing local clay. While Rashi was working on bodies related to the uncarved block, Anja was building amphora like huge vessels.

While questioning ourselves how to create a connection between our practices and the pieces, we started to combine them in finding a position where one piece would shoulder the other one.

The pieces lean on each other, hold and position themselves searching for harmonie and balance. In order to truly communicate, we associated the pieces in joining them in a way so that the two volumes would become one.

We tried to find a way to make them sound using them as a rudimentary instrument, which would allow to send and receive tones.

The openings function either as ear or mouth - depending on how you want to use their communicative potential.

Rolling them in clay, then created traces which mark the coming together of a new form.

Exhibited at the Residents Show, Jun to Sep 2026 @jdzinternationalstudio

I really like how the works by @rashi.jjain and myself come into dialogue within the exhibition. Through similar earthy tones and perhaps even a shared approach to making, they seem to reflect experiences and inspirations gathered during our respective time at the CCCA Art Residency in Yixing.

It's fascinating to think that, despite never having met in person, our works feel so connected, almost as if they were continuing a conversation and expanding upon one another.

I’m deeply honored to have been selected for a fully funded residency in Yixing, China, organized in collaboration with the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC).
I arrived in Yixing three days ago, and I’m still taking it all in. Yixing, home of Zisha (purple clay) and one of the world’s most important ceramic centers has long been a dream destination for ceramic artists. From its rich Zisha tradition to contemporary spaces like UCCA Clay, the city holds a unique dialogue between heritage, material, and contemporary practice.I’m truly grateful for this opportunity to learn, exchange, and create.Over the next three months, I’ll be developing new work and conducting research in this extraordinary environment. I’m truly grateful for this opportunity to learn, exchange, and create.

What happens when art meets nature through the chemistry of material?

Anja Seiler explores the transformative potential of clay, with a particular focus on the natural qualities, traces, and malleability of the material. During her residency at CCCA, she immersed herself in Yixing’s unique purple clay, discovering its remarkable plasticity and its geological history.

Working with large-scale vessels, Anja incorporated memories of the surrounding landscape, translating the textures and traces of stone into her forms. Her practice reflects on the delicate balance between the finite and the infinite, disappearance and permanence, and time, nature, and existence.

For Anja, Yixing purple clay is more than a material—it becomes a medium through which art and nature enter into a quiet dialogue.

🧱 One aspect I particularly appreciate about ceramics is its close relationship with industry. The systems, materials, and processes often overlap, creating a natural space for collaboration between artists, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs.

This became especially visible during our latest visit with @_jacinto_munoz @yangxinguang1212 @lanxixicoli to a local brick factory in Yixing, which actively collaborates with renowned brands and entrepreneurs.

As a brick lover, seeing the raw materials, test tiles, as well as the production scale was truly mesmerizing. 🏺

(Next event) In a few weeks, I’ll be flying back to China for another three-month ceramic residency @ccca.yixing - this time in Yixing 🇨🇳 I’m really looking forward to learning, experimenting and upskilling exploring new ceramic techniques, materials and processes, making lots of tests, making mistakes, and seeing where the work takes me. New city, new clay, new challenges and hopefully lots of new ideas to bring back into my practice. And I seriously can’t wait to reunite with my Chinese sisters and brothers again in Jingdezhen 🥰
.
I’m going to try to document more of my residency life this time around; the studio days, experiments, little discoveries, studio visits, local art gems, and probably plenty of chaos along the way 😂I’ll be sharing it all through this Instagram, so stay tuned and come along for the ride.

Purper clay, metal, Installation view at UCCA, 2026. by @ccca.yixing

Within an untouched piece of clay lies the pure essence of heaven and earth… Drawn by the spirit of the Dao, Indian artist Rashi Jain came to Yixing to explore the rich spectrum of natural clay and seek the original form of Pu—the Daoist concept of the uncarved, primordial state.

👨‍👧 About the Artist:

Born in Mumbai, India, in 1983, Rashi Jain @rashi.jjain is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC). Her practice bridges sculpture and functional vessels, drawing deeply from Indian philosophy, the universal form of Shiva, and the Daoist concept of Pu (the Uncarved Block). Working primarily with coil-building and carving techniques, she treats the human body as both vessel and conduit, exploring the relationship between inner energy and the order of the cosmos.

Her works have been exhibited at the Musée Ariana in Geneva, museums across the United States, and the Jehangir Art Gallery in India. She has also completed artist residencies in Longquan and Jingdezhen, China.

During her residency at CCCA Yixing, Rashi was captivated by the remarkable palette of Yixing’s purple clay. Inspired by the Daoist idea of Pu, she sought to create forms that embody the unrefined purity of things before they are shaped or defined. For her, these works represent a meeting between clay and philosophy, a gentle dialogue between the ancient civilizations of China and India, and a ceramic practice of returning to the material’s most essential nature. by @ccca.yixing
