Please join us for Plastic is Now Nature, a drawing workshop led by @ccdold Saturday October 17, 2026 1-4pm @boxoprojectsjt

Free registration now open at link in bio!

We think of plastic as separate from “pure” nature. Given it’s ubiquity in air, water, soil, human bodies, as Heather Davis points out in Plastic Matter (2022), “plastic is now nature…Despite the fact that plastic is the arch-synthetic material, it remains thoroughly of the earth. Everything is ultimately enfolded back into the geologic layer, including plastic…”

As part of her residency at Boxo, Constance Old is offering a workshop in which we will examine plastic and the desert, and their connection to deep time. We’ll also investigate our personal relationship to plastic historically and currently. What is your first memory of plastic? Your most recent interaction with plastic? We will head outside on Boxo’s property to observe and sketch the dramatic shapes of the desert rocks and flora. Back in the studio we will sketch/draw the shapes and colors of some plastic detritus collected in the desert. We will then work on both a large group drawing and individual drawings inspired by the sketches and the plastic color palette. Together and individually, we will create a visual investigation of “plastic is now nature.”

All materials will be supplied. Please bring a colorful (not white or clear) found plastic object to contribute.

Constance Old is an artist who has worked with upcycled paper and plastic for over 25 years. In 2018, as part of her residency at BoxoPROJECTS, she collected garbage with the Joshua Tree Clean Team. Using some of the gathered material, she installed a temporary intervention on Highway 62, “Always One Shoe, Never Two.” She also participated in Joshua Treenial 2023, producing a billboard for Hwy 62 and a zine distributed at Boxo, both relating to plastic pollution in the desert. She received her MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University. taken in BoxoProjects by @ccdold

Honored to have work included in this exhibit @thenorwalkartspace curated by @suzhardesty and to be exhibiting with @miabrownell @caporalegreene @joanfitzsimmonsphotography @duvianmontoya Please join us for the opening September 3, 6-9 pm

My piece, “Donut,” is made with plastic marine debris. #marinedebris #ghostgear #plasticpollution #plasticinfood

All the materials in “Donut” are polymers that degrade in the ocean into microplastics and other chemicals. #microplastics #industrialfishingwaste #ghostgear

The piece includes a 597 page catalog of plastic bottles for holding potable liquids like water, juice, milk… #plasticbottlesandyou #plasticbottles #plasticandme #plasticintheocean

In order to bring more stuff into Boston Harbor, explosives were charged through this 1/8” hollow tubing, to dredge the harbor channel for bigger container ships #abundancemindset @storyofstuff #abundancementality #plasticisoil

This is a paper cup degraded by the ocean. A thin film of plastic lines every “paper” cup. @ccsdebrisbrigade @coastalstudiesptown #refusesingleuseplastic by @ccdold

Local eco-artist Constance Old is getting some much-deserved love in the latest issue of New Canaan Living — and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see her celebrated.

Her bold, text-driven work lit up the entrance to our recent exhibition, 'Enough Already: Women Artists from the Sara M. and Michelle Vance Waddell Collection,' where her commissioned mural drew visitors into a conversation about language, identity, and the everyday stuff we throw away.

Constance transforms receipts, packaging, stickers, and other “consumer detritus” into vivid, witty compositions that make you smile first, then think harder about waste, women’s lives, and the stories our things tell.

You can STILL take a piece of her vision home: a selection of Constance Old prints from 'Enough Already' is still available in the MoCA\CT gift shop. Check out the New Canaan Living feature on this remarkable local artist, and then stop by the museum to experience her work in person.
