The Center for Civic Engagement works year-round with community members and organizations to facilitate experiential learning opportunities for students. These opportunities encourage students to participate actively as members of the Kalamazoo community beyond being a Kalamazoo College student on campus and incorporate location-based community engagement into the liberal arts education. The CCE does this in three central pillars: Student-Led Programs, Community-Based Courses, and Community Building Internships.

Civic Engagement Scholars (CESs) lead civic engagement programs that take place every week during the academic year. These students work alongside community leaders and organizers to support civic and community work locally in Kalamazoo County. In connection to local and statewide organizations

Civic Engagement Scholars participate in the process to address issues such as: education equity, reproductive freedom, swimming safety, voter engagement and political participation, food justice, immigrant and refugee rights, and more.

Through ongoing training, professional development, and structured reflection Civic Engagement Scholars build skills like: social organizing, communication, lesson planning, facilitation, supervising, program management, and more.

During the course of their role, they continuously develop their leadership style to be more effective, inclusive, and transformational change organizers. This happens through real-world practice in collaboration with the people and leaders in our community to guide the process. by @cceatkcollege

Each summer, the CBI program supports students and our community partners by offering 20-25 immersive paid internships that we develop with the organizations exclusively for our students. CBIs run from June-early August and encompass 240+ hours of work that is well-defined between the intern and community organization. The CCE has dinners on campus with internship supervisors for the interns at least four times per summer to reflect on our work and our community together. Students receive a stipend of $5,000 from the Center for Civic Engagement to compensate them for the work done within the community.

These internships give students hands‑on experience in areas like food security, youth development, creative arts, health equity, neighborhood planning, neurodiversity, community gardening, childcare policy, and more. Students work closely with community partner supervisors on internship learning and project goals. Projects vary by site and may include research, curriculum development, website design, marketing, community organizing, arts programming, program evaluation, and direct service.

The CCE is excited to highlight the work being done through one of our amazing community partner organizations, the Kalamazoo County ID program. For many members of the Kalamazoo community, lack of access to an official photo ID creates a major barrier in the fulfillment of daily necessities. This program, through the office of the Kalamazoo County Clerk, issues a low-barrier, low-cost, official photo ID that helps members of the public navigate interactions with law enforcement more safely, cash checks, open bank accounts, use credit cards, carry a physical reminder of their community membership, and overcome many other barriers.

Through the CCE, students work at the ID program's desk, giving them the chance to participate in local government and work directly with members of the Kalamazoo public. We are so excited to continue our collaboration with KCID!

Three children ran up to Micahaia Reynolds ’27 and told her, "I want you to be my tutor." That moment started a journey of service that led from tutoring local students to helping launch a program that builds confidence, literacy and community. At kzoo.edu/news, read how one K student turned a summer internship with the @DouglassCommunity Association into a deeper sense of purpose. by @cceatkcollege

Avoid the election day lines at the polls and vote early! In Michigan, voters can request and return absent ballots starting now. If you’re eligible to vote this November 3rd, check your registration status at mi.gov/vote and make a plan for how you’ll vote.

If you want the experience of voting in person but can’t make it to the polls on a Tuesday, try out Michigan’s Early Voting from Saturday, October 24th to Sunday November 1st.

Look out for our next post about resources for out-of-state college students voting in their home state! by @cceatkcollege
