Every year, our PD opens up his home for our senior residents to get together, unwind, and enjoy some time outside of the hospital. Even with some very chaotic Cleveland weather, we managed to have a pretty good time!

One of the things that makes CCF surgery special is having leadership that genuinely cares about our residents and makes time to bring us together. These traditions are just one of the many ways our program feels like a family. 💙💚 by @ccfsurgery

We had our annual Intern Welcome Picnic this past weekend! It’s one of our favorite traditions. We had delicious food truck eats, ice cream for dessert, a cake to celebrate PGY-4 @aniballariva birthday 🎂, and we watched Spain take home the World Cup 🏆🇪🇸⚽️

From residents and faculty to family members and four-legged friends, everyone came together to welcome the newest members of our CCF Surgery family.

Meet our 2026–2027 Administrative Chief Residents, Nicole and Jenny! 👑👑

If you’ve ever wondered who is responsible for making the schedule, answering approximately 847 emails a day, coordinating vacations, managing sick days, solving problems, and keeping our residency program from completely descending into chaos… it’s them.

They are the people we go to for everything — schedule changes, vacation requests, sick days, questions, problems, and the occasional “wait… where am I supposed to be tomorrow?” 😅

And somehow, they do it all while being best friends! 🥹💗 Fun fact: Nicole even gave a speech at Jenny’s wedding! 💍

🔬 Resident Research Day 2026🔬

A special thank you to keynote speaker Dr. Callisia Clarke, surgical oncologist at the Medical College of Wisconsin, for her thought-provoking presentation, “A Fragile Pipeline: How Resident Attrition Threatens the Surgical Workforce.”

The day featured resident podium presentations across a wide range of surgical specialties, a faculty debate on the role of AI in surgical research, and recognition of outstanding achievements in resident scholarship.

Congratulations to our Staff Debate Champion, Dr. Mocanu, for successfully making the case against AI in modern surgical research, and to our Resident Research Day winner, Pooja Varman, for her presentation, “Getting the Rust Off: Skill Recovery After Professional Development Time.”

Interns’ Day Out ☀️

One afternoon, no pages, no consults, no discharge summaries.

Our interns spent the day at Edgewater Beach enjoying a picnic, volleyball, spikeball, cornhole, Jimmy John’s, and plenty of snacks before heading out for a two-hour cruise filled with food, music, dancing, and time together outside the hospital.

This annual, program-sponsored tradition is a small thank-you for all of their hard work throughout intern year - and a chance to strengthen friendships and make memories that last long after residency.
