FINAL DUMP! I dub this one “autistic person gets dealers choice”
TOH AND TMA SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT!

This was our second to last digital painting assignment, and we were assigned to take an animated show and design a character that exists in that world with a ref sheet, three props and poses. We were given examples but were told if we provided reference, we could do anything. I chose toh, cuz of course I did- A teacher post canon, but once I paired that idea with a Basilisk I realized they wouldn’t be able to teach magic. But then I looked back at the time-skip curriculum had boiling Iles history. And wouldn’t it be so fitting if Eda chose one of the creatures fucked over most by boiling Iles history to teach the class..

The background was a bit more straight forward, and was my last assignment of the entire year! I wanted to have a scene where Rose and Hunter were hanging out after hours, shit talking Belos and trauma bonding. The scenario is that Hunter helped teach the students about Grimwalker history, once he was ready to talk about it obviously. I’m insanely pleased with how on model I got Hunter- my refs were mostly of him as a teenager so I altered proportions to make a better ref. I enjoy rendering it turns out! Like if I have a plan- I like it a lot! Noted..

This was also a digital painting assignment! We were assigned to make a book cover of any piece of media… I- I finished tma this October.. I NEEDED to get my thoughts out somehow- the hyperfixation is stronger than toh. I am so DEEPLY NORMAL ABOUT THIS PODCAST! anyway, I wanted to have a cassette obscuring Jon’s eyes. In the references I found, there were coloured bars on the cassette, so I had each bar represent a fear. I looked up JONNY SIMS’ IRL PUBLISHER to make sure it was accurate- THERE IS A HIDDEN MESSAGE IN THE BARCODE I AM UWELL-

Even though I didn’t end up taking 3d. I am still so deeply proud of my floating tma island. The autism won- (this was shortly after I finished the series) Eyepocalypse in full swing. But Jmart are on their cabin island with good cows. Helen’s stairs, the evil tree, spider looming over the happy couple. With no malice I’m sure- we have fun ::::D by @ccherry.berryy

Second of three of the animation school dump, yahoo! This bit has all the “stationary” digital art, as well as my sculpting assignments! (Basically just the stuff that doesn’t move)

First up we have my bug deer thing! The assignment called for us to combine two animals together. Naturally my first question was “is a bug considered an animal” I was given the a ok to go nuts and the rest is history. His name is Croissant because as he was being formed, my friends said he looked like one (they were right lol)

Next we have a pair of digital painting assignments. The assignment was to take a perspective drawing (I did not draw this one lmao) and paint two scenes where they have different light sources and corresponding shadows for those different light sources. I feel like this assignment is where I found my footing in digital painting. I’m really happy with these!

Next up, another freak of nature! I call this guy snake foot. No formal name just snake foot. This assignment required us to take animalistic and humanoid features and combine them into a silly little guy. I thought my first hybrid was too earnest, I wanted to make something stupid! And so this guy was born! I’d imagine he moves with the foot stomping around as the body trails behind and forward depending on the direction of the motion. Just a silly guy

This next assignment was for perspective class, and we had to make a barn in 2 point perspective. A barn that included humans AND HORSES in perspective- Gang. Before this I had never drawn a convincing horse- let alone a full body horse- I AM OVER THE MOON WITH THE RESULT!

Idk how I made this last one with my own two hands- put a gun to my head and I couldn’t tell you- PRIDE IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT- TF YOU MEAN I CAN JUST DO *THAT* IF I LOCK IN??? This was an assignment all about realistic texture. Wooden, reflective, fabric, and dealers choice. I felt like soup could fit all those into a cohesive image, idk what to tell you man but, good soup!

Hey so ummmm… Been a while- been a year and a half in fact- so what was I possibly doing with my time? GETTING EDUCATION THATS WHAT!!
I’ve finished my first year of animation school!! And I thought what better way to come back than to show you what I got up to the past year.
These are not in chronological order, i jump around quite a bit for verities sake. But these are all the animations im proud enough to show/ have access to (more will come later, I yapped too much in the caption to put them all in one post)

First up! hey that guy looks familiar- Jokes aside, I used Cerise for a lot of my animation mechanics assignments, because I wanted to get used to drawing them. Why? For umm YouTube related things? Maybe?? (I’m working on it) this assignment was a walk cycle and then tracking that walk cycle to move across the screen. I slightly altered their design to make them funnier to animate. as you can see, the Sonic esque nose stuck lol

Not much to say about the flag wave, fairly simple assignment utilizing drag and settle.

Next was the Golf swing. I will admit, very rushed (I finished it minutes after the deadline and thankfully wasn’t punished too much for it) but I believe in sharing work even if you aren’t the most proud of it. They can’t all be winners.

My first animation fundamentals assignment! The classic ball bounce, but with 3 different weights! The bouncing ball is pretty straight forward. I like how I used the bowling ball’s holes to make it look like it was turning. But I am the most proud of that balloon- even now I’m like “damn, I did that… AND IT WAS THE FIRST THING I ANIMATED”

Another one I’m now 100% proud of. But I’m giving myself grace because this is the second time I ever used a rig. and even if I’m not accustomed to them yet, I’m glad I’m trying them.

Last in both this post, and in animation in general; The lift and throw assignment. In hindsight, the timing is a bit fast, but I was on a deadline so I’m happy with it. (I actually took reference for this that ended up hurting my arms and legs the next few days lmao)

I also didn’t intend to not post for this long, fully my bad lmao. I’ve been doing A LOT since I last posted (4 months ago my gosh-) I’ve gotten into animation school! And have not stopped making art- I’ve gone full force into crochet (dead crochet acc what’s up, I’m coming back for you! @unequeeryarn ) as well as story based shenanigans (blorbos my beloved) this shift has been inspired by June somewhat as well. I’m killing my darlings! I’M DOING IT! And I can only hope you’ll join me on this ride

One of the reasons I wanted to redo this challenge was because as I was creating a portfolio, I got way better at figure drawing than I was last year.

As the reel says, a year in the making, however this only took me 3 weeks? Let’s talk about it!

This is my finished product for a story boarding online course I took with Gobelin’s university last year. However!! this is in no way a slight to them. they did exactly what they were supposed to! I just was not at the skill level, nor mature enough to take their advice with stride. So I hid this project in the corner of my save-files, hoping I’d never see it again. What was meant to be a labour of love, became a labour of resentment

So why am I posting it now? Well, I’ve been thinking (and over thinking) about how perfection is so highly valued in creative spaces when it really shouldn’t be?like you get told to off yourself if your song sucks (a real thing that’s real person had to go through, and @sharnyrin made an excellent video talking about. Which is what prompted this discussion in the first place)

We get so precious with every aspect of ourselves that we indirectly (or directly) project that shame onto other people, dehumanizing them. And I feel like that’s genuinely such a big problem in creative spaces but also society as a whole. I’ve seen so many video essays about how the soul from art is being stripped from it, and I feel like part of that is due to the stress of perfection. Hell that’s why I think spider-verse’s art style works so well (however it’s not a unique observation)

So how does this relate back to that first point? Well I feel like one of the reasons we are so pushed to perfection is because we are terrified of the backlash that comes with mediocrity. We (I) feel the need to only post finished work and the best thing I’d made in that moment. Once something becomes better, that first thing I poured my heart and soul into becomes obsolete. Even I find it in artists I admire making fun of their old art (which I do too) it’s good to find humour in it (and I’m not trying to criticize, that is the antithesis of this whole thesis) But I feel like it’s important to think deeper as to why we make these comments towards our younger selves.

Surprise! New oc time babyyyyyy! Well kinda.
#actuallyinfected2024 the final prompt anomaly! (Still no clue what to do with blue screen but we aren’t gonna think about that)

I thought it was only fitting to use my oc I finally figured out a design for as the muse for this prompt. (Also just to be clear, I did not draw this background. I lifted it from observation duty and drew her over top of it because I thought it would look spooky)

This is Ember (her name is subject to change) she was hinted in many a post but in ways that only made sense to me because I wanted to keep her ambiguous (also I had no clue how to design her) this is her true form but not necessarily the form we see her in that often. Basically she’s Bipper/Darcy/Helos-ing Nessa aka using her as a puppet for her own gain. But she didn’t choose this out of malicious intent, she was kinda forced into this body after her lifeblood fused with Nessa’s form to create the Nessa we know and love (at least I love her lol)

By design, they cannot exist without each other in the state they are currently in. Nessa was never meant to be alive in the first place, and Ember was never meant to house her body. (but in the process she did learn she was trans so like little victories)
