For so long, over ten years, pain was just a staple of my everyday life. I got used to planning around it, pushing through it, and missing out on things because my body simply wouldn’t let me do them. I have congenital spinal stenosis, and (had 😁) two large herniated discs at L4 L5 and L5 S1. In 2024, it got to its worst and I started losing mobility in my left leg and left foot.. when I broke my foot and ankle? Yeah, I thank my back for that! The nerve pain down my legs became so severe that even the most everyday things could feel impossible. I lived off of Advil. I had to take 800mg just to get through my wedding day. After living that way for so long, I started to forget what it felt like to just exist without constantly thinking about pain.

Then I met Dr. Zavarella.

On July 14th, he performed my lumbar spine surgery at L4-L5 and L5-S1, and I truly don’t know if I’ll ever be able to put into words what he gave back to me. From the beginning, I felt like I was in the hands of someone who genuinely cared about helping me get my life back—not just treating what showed up on an MRI.

Recovery hasn’t always been easy, and there have definitely been moments that tested me, but the difference between where I was before surgery and where I am today is something I can’t explain. The debilitating nerve pain that controlled so much of my life is no longer controlling me. I can move forward instead of constantly wondering how much something is going to hurt.

There are certain people you meet in life who leave a profound impact, and Dr. Zavarella is one of those people. Being able to live pain free, move more freely, and look forward to everything ahead of me is something that feels almost impossible to repay with a simple “thank you.”

Dr. Zavarella, thank you for listening to me, taking care of me, and giving me the chance to feel like myself again. Thank you for giving me my life back that I honestly wasn’t sure I would ever have again. Some people change your life simply by doing their job exceptionally well. I will forever be grateful that you were my surgeon

Here’s to healing, getting stronger every day, and finally moving forward.
