Celebrate Halloween safely on these Trick-or-Treating Safe Streets! 🍭

Our office, in partnership with @ladotofficial, has coordinated three neighborhood street closures on Saturday, October 31, from 5–10 PM to make trick-or-treating safer and more fun for the whole community!

🎃 Armstrong Ave. Closure: Armstrong Ave. from Silver

Armstrong Ave. to Tesla
🎃 Ambrose Ave. Closure: Ambrose from the dead end
to Kenmore & Normandie from Ambrose to N.
Cummings Drive

Please note: These streets will be closed to all vehicle traffic from 5–10 PM. Residents should plan alternate travel routes and move any vehicles that may need to exit the area before the closures begin.

Thank you for helping us celebrate safely. Have a fun and spoooooky Halloween! 👻 by @cd4losangeles

Today I was proud to recognize the Sisters of Social Service as CD4’s honoree for National Clergy Month, joined by Sister Chris Machado and Sister Marie Lindemann in Council chambers. This year is an especially meaningful one for the Sisters as they celebrate 100 years of service in Los Angeles!

The Sisters’ story begins in Budapest, Hungary, in 1923, as a group of women who answered a call to social justice by serving people who were vulnerable socially, economically, and politically. In 1926, Sister Frederica Horvath brought that mission here to Los Angeles, where the Sisters lived and worked alongside the people they served, including immigrants, women, children, and families facing poverty and hardship.

In Council District 4, we know them best through the Holy Spirit Retreat Center, which began in the early 1930s as the first retreat center for women in the Archdiocese and has called Encino home since 1969. Today, around 19,000 people a year come to those quiet, wooded grounds to rest and renew. The Sisters welcome everyone to their spiritual home — people of every faith and of no faith at all, asking only that they share respect for one another.

On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, thank you, Sisters, for 100 years of dedication to creating safe spaces for those in need, and congratulations on your Centennial! by @cd4losangeles

Today, I was so proud to lead the 15th annual Good Food Day celebration here in the City of Los Angeles, and honor the Los Angeles Food Policy Council!

Food Day is a national initiative to inspire Americans to change our food policies and create food systems that work better for all of us. Here in Los Angeles, that work has been carried forward by the Food Policy Council over 15 years of organizing, convening, and advocating for the idea that healthy food should not be a privilege, but something that every Angeleno can count on.

I was also thrilled to honor Every Day Action, as CD4’s very own Good Food Champions! Founded by Hillary Cohen and Samantha Luu, Every Day Action reallocates unused food from TV and film sets so it doesn’t go to waste, and redistributes it to unhoused and under-resourced communities transforming how sets have traditionally operated.

I want to thank everyone who helped organize today’s event, including Executive Director of the Los Angeles Food Policy Council, Alba Velasquez, and all of the Good Food Champions recognized today. It is your work that keeps us focused on a vision of good food for all. by @cd4losangeles

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the City of Los Angeles beginning Thursday, October 15, at 6:00AM, due to wind conditions that could increase the risk of wildfire. These restrictions help keep roads clear for emergency responders and residents who may need to evacuate.

Restrictions are expected to remain in effect for at least 48 hours. Vehicles illegally parked in posted restricted areas will be towed. Drivers are advised to avoid canyon roads.

Happy 100th birthday to the Shakespeare Bridge! 🎉

For a full century, this beloved bridge has been one of Franklin Hills’ most recognizable landmarks. Officially known as the Franklin Avenue Bridge, its Gothic towers — reminiscent of Elizabethan England — inspired locals to nickname it the Shakespeare Bridge, and the name stuck!

Much like the Bard himself, the Shakespeare Bridge has quite a story to tell. When it was built in 1926, the bridge initially had its critics, and the LA Times even called it “atrocious.” By 1974, attitudes had changed, and the bridge was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. After it was badly damaged in the Northridge earthquake, the bridge underwent a historic restoration, and today it stands as one of the City’s most cherished treasures.

I loved joining our neighbors for this weekend’s centennial block party to celebrate this incredible milestone and present a City Council resolution recognizing the Shakespeare Bridge as one of the defining landmarks of the City of Los Angeles.

A huge thank-you to the Franklin Hills Residents Association and all the wonderful neighbors who helped bring this celebration to life! Here’s to 100 years of history, a neighborhood full of character, and many more years of bringing our community together! by @cd4losangeles

Today in Council, I was proud to recognize Beckham Williams and Shakira Nieves, two Council District 4 students who served on the Olivia Mitchell LA City Youth Council, where young Angelenos from across the city dig into the workings of local government and bring policy and budget recommendations directly to City leaders.

Beckham, a high school student and reporter for The Harvard-Westlake Chronicle, also founded and leads The Holloway, an environmental journal, while Shakira is studying Environmental Science at CSUN with minors in Writing & Rhetoric and Sustainability.

Their shared commitment to protecting our environment and telling the stories that matter gives me real hope for the future of our city, and I’m grateful for the energy and ideas they brought to City Hall! by @cd4losangeles

I am incredibly proud to announce an innovative new partnership between the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD) and the Superior Court of Los Angeles County to protect tenants facing illegal evictions!

For the first time, LAHD and the Superior Court will share data and responsibilities related to eviction notices and unlawful detainer filings, helping to ensure that landlords comply with all City eviction notice requirements and that tenants are not pushed out of their homes by invalid notices.

In 2023, my office led the effort to pass a suite of permanent tenant protections, including a requirement that landlords file their intent to evict with LAHD within three business days. Since then, the City has been receiving eviction information directly from landlords and has been able to target resources for tenants who may be facing illegally issued notices. However, the sheer volume of filings has meant the City needs additional support to review these filings and determine whether eviction proceedings are lawful.

My office reached out to the Superior Court, which handles thousands of eviction cases every year, about establishing a partnership to cross-reference the City’s data with the Court’s to ensure compliance with eviction notice filing requirements, and a three-year agreement was signed on September 16.

Now, two powerful forces, the City’s Housing Department and the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, are redefining what it means to work collaboratively using data sharing to help keep Angelenos in their homes.

Pour yourself a cup of ambition, it’s Dolly Parton Day! ☕️✨

Following @dollyparton’s passing, I was moved to honor the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind. On August 26, our office convened every woman on the City Council and introduced a resolution recognizing September 25 — or 9/25 — as Dolly Parton Day in the City of Los Angeles.

A special piece of LA history: Mayor Tom Bradley officially declared September 20, 1979 the first “Dolly Parton Day” in Los Angeles. This framed photo is from that day, of Dolly with former CD4 Councilmember Tom LaBonge.

Dolly was so much more than the “Queen of Country.” Across seven decades, she became one of America’s most celebrated artists while breaking barriers for women in entertainment, championing dignity and equality, supporting the LGBTQ+ community, and giving generously to causes close to her heart.

It is an extraordinary honor to recognize an icon whose music, songwriting, humor, advocacy, philanthropy, and unmistakable spirit touched generations. Dolly’s contributions reached far beyond the stage, leaving an indelible mark on Los Angeles, our country, and the world.

Dolly will always be missed, and we will always love her! by @cd4losangeles

Nine years ago, former Councilmember Paul Koretz spearheaded an annual Council tradition: pausing each September to recognize Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and the organization leading the fight against it — The Ovarian Cancer Circle, Inspired by Robin Babbini. I’ve been honored to carry the torch on this presentation for the past few years, and last Friday, joined by founder Paulinda Schimmel and an extraordinary community of survivors, I was proud to once again recognize The Circle and Paulinda’s tireless fight for a cure.

Twenty years ago, Paulinda lost her daughter Robin to ovarian cancer. Robin was just 20 years old, a college freshman with her whole life ahead of her. Her pain was initially dismissed, and by the time her cancer was diagnosed, it had already advanced.

Paulinda chose to turn that unimaginable loss into purpose. In 2010, she founded @ovariancancercircle in Robin’s memory. Since then, the organization has raised and directed more than $1.5 million toward gynecologic oncology research at UCLA Health — while building a powerful community of doctors, researchers, survivors, and advocates committed to changing the way we understand and fight this disease.

Thank you to Paulinda and The Ovarian Cancer Circle for turning grief into action, investing in research, raising awareness, and standing alongside women and families facing ovarian cancer — a disease that takes far too many lives while receiving far too little attention.

Your work keeps hope alive — not just each September, but every day. by @cd4losangeles

One last splash before the end of summer! ☀️💦

Neighbors from across CD4 came together at VNSO Aquatics Center over Labor Day weekend for an afternoon of swimming, games, food, and fun — and the perfect send-off to summer.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the VNSO Aquatics Team, Department of Recreation & Parks, PlayLA, and Citywide Aquatics for helping make the day possible.

We’ll see you around the district at more CD4 community events this fall! 🌴 by @cd4losangeles
