If you’re making the trip to eastern Washington, Coeur d’Alene is absolutely worth the short detour.

The course is famous for the 14th hole — a floating island green in the middle of Lake Coeur d’Alene — but the experience goes way beyond that one hole.

Every round includes a caddie, you can get a complimentary massage before your round, and even the driving range is unique: you’re hitting directly into the lake with balls designed to fly about 80% of their normal carry.

And then you get to 14.

Hit your approach, hop on a boat, and head out to the island green.

It’s one of those golf experiences that feels almost too crazy to be real.

If Gamble Sands is on your golf itinerary, make Coeur d’Alene the other stop. It’s worth it.

#Golflovelist // The 14th hole at The Coeur d’Alene Resort is one of the most unique holes in golf — and easily one of the biggest bucket-list experiences in the game. @cdaresortgolf

This par 3 features the world’s only movable, floating island green, sitting in Lake Coeur d’Alene. The roughly 15,000-square-foot green is moved each day using an underwater cable system, meaning the yardage can change from as short as 90 yards to as long as 220 yards depending on the tees and setup.

And once you hit your tee shot, you don’t simply walk to the green. You take a boat — appropriately named The Putter — out to the island to finish the hole.

The water definitely gets plenty of action. Divers pull an estimated 30,000 golf balls from the lake every year.
But there’s an extra incentive to keep your ball dry: make par or better and you receive a personalized Certificate of Achievement commemorating the hole.

It’s part golf hole, part engineering marvel, and part amusement park ride — and it’s an experience you’ll remember long after the round is over.
