Mothers Day

My mother gave birth to me at the young age of 20. For many years, in my eyes, it was just she and I. However, now that I am older I like to say something else.
“I was raised by 4 women and 3 men!”
I like to think she’d agree that my aunt, my grandmother, my step mother, my grandfather, my uncle and my father all had a hand in the upbringing of me. But that does not discredit anything my mom does and continues to do.

I love being able to say “My mom is my best friend.” Because she truly is.

Growing up I always felt a little different and maybe I was maybe I wasn’t but my mom never made me feel that way. She made me feel loved and she made me feel normal. She taught me how to have empathy, compassion, patience (still working on that), humility, respect, generosity, and gratitude. She showed me first hand what unconditional love looks like and how it feels to receive it.

She worked at Overbrook School for the Blind where she’d take me for bring your kid to work day. I genuinely loved going because I always had so much fun hanging out with other kids. And she made it clear that’s exactly all they were. Just kids. Kids born to live under different circumstances than me.

I like to think that’s a major reason why I am as empathic and compassionate as I am. And I am so thankful for that.

She showed up to every football game, every baseball game, every basketball game, and every lacrosse game. She stood by me through my wrongs and my rights. Through it all, she was there.

This year my grandmother passed away. This was the first Mother’s Day where my mom was not able to show her appreciation for her mother. But the older my mom gets the more I see my Mom Mom in her.

I see my grandmothers smile in her, I see her UNRIVALED love for her family, I see the empathy that was instilled in her, I see the genuine care and concern for her loved ones. I also see she is just as nosy as her mother, just as silly, and just as ridiculous. It was like I was able to spend the day with both of them.

Mom, I hope you had a wonderful day. To feel your love is to feel the warmth of an angel.
