Lip Filler Maintenance

“How long will this last?” is one of the most common questions I get asked when a patient receives cosmetic injectibles. The answer depends on what type of treatment was performed and on what part of the face.

This specific treatment was lip filler maintenance. That means, the patient had lip filler treatment in the past and comes to have the lips reassessed, reshaped, and/or refilled. We talk about what she liked and did not like from her last lip filler treatment. We talk about her lifestyle and activity level. We talk about expectations vs reality of lip filler. And then we talk about the duration of lip filler appearance and aethetic.

So how long does it last? Lip fillers come in a variety of consistencies ranging from thin fluid-like to firm types. To cut the explaination short, we can expect for the lip filler to last for 6 months up to several years, based off current findings. Patient-specific factors affecting the duration of the filler include the individual’s metabolism, age, activity level, and lifestyle.

“When do I know to come back?” I used to instruct my patients to come back in 6-months, but found that was too rigid. Now, the answer depends on healing, the patient’s specific aesthetic goals, and capacity of the lip tissue. Attaining a desired shape and volume usually takes a few sessions, so expect to have an open and honest conversation with your injector about your goals and what you like/don’t like about each lip transformation. Remember, dissolving could be apart of the journey too!

My recipe for Botox treatment of the lower face…

-DAO (downward frowning muscle)
-Mentalis (chin dimpling)
-Nefertiti (jawline laxity)
-Platysmal bands (downward pulling of the neck and neck laxity)
