It was a privilege and an honor to perform again in the stage play “Port Chicago 50,” where I portray the life of Spencer E. Sikes, at the California Theatre in Pittsburg, CA for the 80th Anniversary of the Port Chicago blast that occurred on July 17, 1944 during WWII. On that day a catastrophic explosion at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine resulted in the loss of 320 sailors, of which 202 were African American. The explosion happened because none of the men were properly trained to handle munitions, yet they were given orders and expected to load huge amounts of explosives and missiles as quickly as possible onto two large munitions’ ships. After the explosion, the surviving African American sailors were ordered to continue loading munitions onto ships. When they refused to do so, 50 of them were charged with mutiny, a charge that carried the death penalty.

In attendance for the performance was the Honorable Carlos Del Toro, Secretary of the Navy, who signed the order to fully exonerate the 256 sailors of general and summary courts-martial on July 17, 2024. With him was the General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer of the Department of the Navy, John P. Coffey, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Secretary of the Navy, Tracy Roosevelt, who is the great-granddaughter of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Thurgood Marshall Jr., son of the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, and many other dignitaries.

A special thank you to the son and daughter of Spencer E. Sikes, the sailor whose life that I portray, for also being in attendance. Words cannot express how grateful and humble I am to be chosen to step into the life of your father. He was a brave and inspiring man that stood up for justice! #portchicago50 #portchicago50play #portchicago #broadwaybound #pittsburgca #concordca #usnavy #usnavysailor taken in Pittsburg, California by @cedricdarius
