Hospitality, culture & the business behind both. I spot opportunities in how people gather, spend and come back.

I took a picture of dessert, but that wasn’t the part of this visit that stuck with me.

I was the guest of a Hilton Diamond member, and we stopped in the hotel’s common area. The bartender/knew how to make that member feel recognized. It wasn’t a big announcement or a rehearsed speech. It was in the attention and the way they cared for us.

I felt it too, even though the status wasn’t mine.

I think hotels sometimes underestimate how much of a loyalty program lives with the staff. The benefits matter, of course. But having someone recognize you outside of check-in? That’s the kind of thing people remember.

Anyway. This is what happens when I leave the house. 😂

I’ve been posting a little more lately, and I think I wanna keep that going.

If you’ve been here a while, you already know I can go from music to food to a random business idea in one conversation. I’m not apologizing for, nor am I cleaning that up for this next season of life. 😊

What I am going to share more of is the stuff I notice when I’m out. I’ve worked in restaurants, hospitality and marketing for years, so even when I’m just enjoying myself, part of my brain is paying attention to how everything works.

The people. The little decisions. The things that make you want to come back.

So you’ll still see my life here. You’ll just hear more of what I’m thinking along the way. by @cee.lashley

I’ve watched enough Crumbl reviews to recognize that pink box before anyone opens it.

Top tier brand recognition in my opinion.

So seeing reports of at least 57 locations closing this year made me think about what we’re actually measuring when we call marketing successful.

Views matter. Followers can help. Getting people curious enough to try your product is real work.

But what happens after they try it?

Here’s a hypothetical comparison: 800,000 views that bring in 200 customers, versus 40,000 local views that bring in 400.

The second one looks less impressive on a screenshot. I’d still want to know more about those 400 customers.

What did they spend? Did they enjoy the experience? How many came back without another promotion?

I’m not pretending Crumbl’s challenges can be explained by social media alone. Pricing, expansion, operating costs and the product experience all deserve a closer look.

But this is why I ask businesses what they want the attention to accomplish.

Getting someone to try you is one win. Giving them a reason to keep choosing you is where the work continues.

I want people talking about the business. More importantly, I ALSO WANT THEM COMING BACK.

I got to the third slide of @chaplinsbarandgrill carousel and the manager in me was getting slightly irritated with Brady Williams.

A Chap Cheese & Tots and a salmon club? How much food did this man and his friends order before walking out?!

I kept swiping, increasingly invested in a bill that did not exist.

By the last slide, Chaplins admitted there was no Brady. They just wanted to show us some of their favorites. Fair enough. It worked.

The fake callout got my attention, but the food stayed in front of me the whole time. That’s the smart part. They knew people would keep swiping for the drama, so they used every slide to show what they actually sell.

I’ve been to Chaplins, too. We celebrated our daughter’s 21st birthday there, and the service was amazing. She went back later for her official celebration with friends, and they treated her well then too.

YES, I fell for the Brady Williams story. I’m more than happy to give them credit for the genius marketing and the experience behind it. by @cee.lashley
