I'd often catch ba daydreaming. Đám Giỗ (death anniversary) Year One at his happy place, the land and property that somehow still stands today through it all - where he grew up and had always shared happy childhood memories about. Like hanging out with his seagull friend and wandering the lush grounds that surrounded a lotus flower and fish-filled pond. Here I was, imagining him standing in this very spot looking out of this doorway counting his blessings and revelling in fondness of his home-home and the memories it served as the backdrop of - just as I was in this very moment. Ba always had this unshakable love, heartbreak and longing for Vietnam. In this very moment, I finally understood him and met him where he would wander off to in his daydreams 🤍. My fatherland.
