Meet Anna Phan, director of @trio.ub.umnduluth! 👋

Anna says students are at the heart of Upward Bound. “I feel truly honored to be part of their learning journey, to help them discover opportunities, and to support them as they work toward making their hopes and goals a reality. It feels great to be able to play even a small part in a student’s journey toward college and beyond.”

What advice does she have for students?

“Know that there is a whole village of professionals who are passionate about your success. You may already know some of them, and there may be others you have not connected with yet. Find those people. Ask questions. Ask for help. Successful people know that they do not have to figure everything out on their own, and they know how to ask for support when they need it.

You’ve got this, and we’re here for you!”

Happy Birthday, Eugene W. Bohannon! 🥳🎂🎉

Did you know that Bohannon Hall is named after the first president of our campus?

Back in 1901, a 35-year-old Bohannon beat out 20 rival candidates to become president of what was then called the Duluth Normal School—all for a grand salary of $2,500/year!

A few fun facts about our CEHSP building’s namesake: 🎓✨
🫐 He was an avid gardener and had an actual blueberry bog in his backyard east of Old Main! 🌱
🔥 He overcame early funding delays and rebuilt after a major building fire right before opening day in 1902.
🏫 The Normal School opened with just 1 building, 10 faculty members, and about 100 students! 👨‍🏫👩‍🎓The Normal School became the Duluth State Teachers' College in 1921 and was eventually renamed the University of Minnesota, Duluth (1959).
🏛️ In 1974, Bohannon's son George unveiled the plaque officially dedicating Bohannon Hall in his honor. 📜

Next time you walk through Bohannon Hall (est. in 1960), give a little shoutout to the man who helped lay the foundation for the UMD we know today! 🎓❤️

Future change-makers in action! 👏🔥

Five UMD MSW students—Ashley, Caitlen, Julie, Andrea, and Cory—took the stage today at the St. Louis County Health & Human Services Conference! #UMDProud

Combining their classroom knowledge with real-world child welfare experience from MN, WI, and FL, they led a presentation titled “Child Welfare at the Crossroads: Anti-Oppressive Practice with Refugee and Immigrant Families.”

They challenged attendees to look deeper at how language barriers, migration stress, and resource gaps impact families navigating child welfare systems—and made suggestions for how social workers can help. 🙌❤️

Get to know Scott Carlson, an associate professor in @umn_duluth_psychology who enjoys mentoring the student research process, from question to publication.

He has some sage advice for students: "Keep an open mind and question everything critically (but not cynically). Try not to let others, including AI, do your thinking for you.

Get involved in things outside of class that you might not be able to if you weren’t a college student. Internships, study abroad, and research can help make what you learn in your classes clearer and more meaningful to you. Student organizations and clubs can help you feel connected.

If you find you’re struggling in a class, or even just not understanding something as well as you would like, go see your instructor in their drop-in hours or send them an email. You may be surprised how many instructors and advisors are here primarily because they really want to help students succeed.

Finally, make time for your well-being and make a point of doing whatever it is that recharges your battery. It is easy to get busy, miss self-care and then burn out."

What does real-world undergraduate research actually look like? 💡

For UMD student Myah Green, it meant researching a vital issue in education: burnout among Minnesota teachers in Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE).

As part of UMD’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), Myah had the opportunity to contribute to research that goes beyond the classroom and share that work with professionals in the field. She recently presented the findings at the Minnesota DAPE conference alongside Assistant Professors Kahyun Nam and Lisa Paulson!

The team also submitted an abstract to the National SHAPE America Convention, which will be held in Charlotte, NC, this April, with a manuscript currently under review.

We’re excited to see where Myah’s research experience takes her next!🐾

DITL of a zookeeper 🐸🦀🐰

Last week in the fundamental movements course, our Physical Education majors teamed up with preschoolers from Children’s Place for an adventure at the zoo!

The preschoolers took on the role of animals that needed to make their way safely back to the zoo, while our future PE teachers encouraged and supported them along the way.

At each station, the kids explored different animal movements, from crab walks and gorilla walks to kangaroo jumps and so many more! When the music stopped, everyone froze before moving on to the next station to find another animal.

While the animal movements made the activity fun, the most important part of the experience was connection. Our PE majors had the opportunity to practice encouraging young learners, building trust and creating a positive environment where children felt comfortable moving, exploring, and having fun.

A little movement, a lot of imagination, and so many smiles… What a fun day at the zoo! 🐾 Two PE majors pose with a preschooler during the zoo-themed activity. by @cehsp

Please help us welcome Nawal! 👋 We're excited to have her join the CEHSP team!

"Hi everyone! My name is Nawal, and I’m the student visual communications assistant for CEHSP. I’m currently a junior majoring in Information Systems and Chinese. I’m passionate about creativity, communication and finding ways to bring ideas to life through visual storytelling.

A few fun facts about me are that I love to bake and paint, and I’m currently learning how to play the guitar.

Last year, I had the opportunity to study abroad in London, which was one of the best experiences of my life. Living in a new city and experiencing a different culture allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone, meet new people and create so many unforgettable memories.

I’m excited for this new opportunity to work with CEHSP and to help highlight the many hardworking students, faculty and staff who make the college such a special community. I’m looking forward to learning new skills, meeting more people, and using my creativity to share the stories and accomplishments of the CEHSP community. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store!” Graphic with image of Nawal and text around her about how she likes cats, coffee and the color light blue by @cehsp
