🙋🏻‍♀️ I got a great question about what work I choose to accept, so I’m sharing how over the past six years I have essentially created my own framework for ‘work’. (Written* on the back of an unpaid bill 😬.) Pivoting out of a career job into a slashie life – which combines creativity, collaboration and community, all with a sense of purpose – has given me great satisfaction.1️⃣First, I want to interrogate what we define as work: I used to dismiss anything that didn’t earn money as ‘not work’, but this is simply not true, especially when you consider all the volunteers, community workers, artists, stay-at-home mothers etc. who still earn zilch for their labour. Work, for me = meaningful output.2️⃣Secondly, though this all seems chaotic, I actively chose this path and have cultivated a lifestyle that supports it. It’s NOT for everyone. But since many people still query ‘what EXACTLY do you do?’ and also ask how to start their own projects here is how it looks in my head. Also – ask ANY freelancer and they will often have a ‘job’ that looks like this.3️⃣Thirdly, I’ve seen our community champions be taken advantage of because they give their heart and soul but don’t ask for money. Don’t take people for granted just because they are generous 😡! Bills are bills, and people need to be paid.Do you have any other questions? Thoughts? On the Farne Islands, Arctic terns pecked our heads as we disembarked; not in friendly greeting, rather to warn us against getting too close to their chicks. These birds have the longest migration record out of any animal in the world - flying between 40,000-60,000 miles every year to reach safe breeding ground. We submitted ourselves to such small acts of violence, if it meant protecting what they had travelled so far to achieve.Annual bird migration is a timeless and spiritual ritual. These animals have in-built genetic GPS that compels them to always move, to thrive and survive. Birds do not observe manmade borders or time zones, nor immigration checks or passport control. Migration is their birthright. What a fundamental and humble way to understand ourselves. by @celestialpeach_uk

Appreciation post 🩷 For all the volunteers who show up every week @eseacc_luncheon_club. Who know this isn’t a restaurant; that cooking food is the least of what we do. That @eseacommunitycentre provides a safe space to be exactly who you are and who you were always meant to be. For turning up in good spirits, always ready to clean, or to fulfil random last minute side quests - like wrapping hundreds of zongzi or blowing out eggs. For understanding that praise will rarely come from the elders, but that deep down they really appreciate your efforts 🫂 Couldn’t tag everyone, missing @pigilla @b_0ut_there @gnahoo_food @rdcrus @annsannotations @notaprilji @cymbalhands @butteredgasoline @joycentrism @jcho_11 and guest DJ @itslooroll by @celestialpeach_uk

I have a 99% ‘original content only’ policy here. But it’s summer solstice, and we just had Dragon Boat Festival, AND I went down a rabbit hole researching Chinese flower arrangement...Using my 1% allowance for these photos from a 1984 exhibition presented by the Women’s Garden and Art Club of the Republic of China and the National History Museum of Taiwan. You see, I wanted to research Eastern flower arranging - just not ikebana. An article I found explained: “Traditional Chinese flower arranging differs from the well-known Japanese form of the art. Unlike the particular placement of flowers which emphasizes structure and form in Japanese flower arranging, the Chinese craft is an expression of mood and feeling which does not adhere to a standard form.”Flower arrangement goes back to the peak of the Song dynastic literati movement, when it was a cultivated scholastic appreciation in tandem with brush painting and tea. Buddhist temples would also arrange flowers such as lotuses, to represent inner peace. This first arrangement here is Dragon Boat-themed! Can you spot the auspicious ornaments?Source: @twpanorama by @celestialpeach_uk
