❤️‍🔥LIVES AT STEAK ❤️‍🔥had its screening yesterday phwoahhh. Making this film with the most inspiring women @joana_caiano @julia__grogan @maria_molsa was a dream come true. Let’s talk contact lenses and the MASSIVE role they played in 28 Years Later. The original lenses from 28 Weeks Later were bright red with a dilated pupil. I wanted the lenses in our flashback scenes to be slightly more broken up around the iris, with a bright circle of red in the centre to make the eyes ‘pop’.

Working with Ben Ip to create concept designs for 28 Years Later, I wanted the colouring to be older, darker and more clotted. Globules of cataract break up the iris further showing age and unprotected exposure to the sun. There is also a subtle ‘tache noir’ (when someone dies with their eyes open - the eyeball essentially dries out and a dark horizontal line appears) and a milky film over the eyeball to suggest a nod to the ‘death’ of the human within the infected.

After talking through these designs with Danny Boyle and making any changes, I then send off the concepts to Eyeworks For Film who hand paint the lenses specifically for each actor and background artist. Eyeworks then supply the wonderful Lens Technicians who put the scleral lenses (they cover the whole eye, not just the iris) into the actors eyes, maintain them during the day (drops etc) and remove them in the evening.
