Celine Cheung is the recipient of the 2026 Parramatta Artists Studios Creative Fellowship. โ  โ  Through the PAS Creative Fellowship, Celine will undertake a research-led project examining opium chatelaines: decorative and utilitarian objects popular in Qing Dynasty China that were worn from the waist and used in the preparation and consumption of opium. โ  โ  Her project, โ€˜Dismantling the Masterโ€™s Toolsโ€™ examines the legacy of the opium trade, through which Britain exported highly addictive opium to China to secure economic and political control, leading to the Opium Wars and the eventual colonisation of Hong Kong. For Celine, these wearable objects open up questions about addiction as a means of colonial control, but also contradictions with the inventionโ€™s feminist origins. Drawing parallels with contemporary material culture, this project seeks to imagine diverging paths following devastation. โ  โ  The PAS Creative Fellowship will support Celine to develop this new area of enquiry through archival research, interviews, technical skills development and material experimentation. hi all ~ I'm honoured to be a part of a beautiful group exhibition 'Within Heaven and Earth' @fairfieldcitymuseumgallery ~ hope to see some of u at the launch next Saturday ๐Ÿค๐Ÿชฝ 22 March 2025, 4-7pm ๐ŸŽ "In search of renewal and healing, the artists in 'Within Heaven and Earth' share a multi-dimensionality of storytelling to explore personal identity and cultural memory."
