@studio.barbare evolving new kit 😋

Since we’re based in Tekirdağ at @barbarevineyards, the material we have in greatest abundance is grape crates — especially during harvest. These crates are designed for optimal stacking and are structurally very strong, which makes them a perfect building block for us.

The set is formed by stacking crates for height and adding surface levels with wood or metal sheets, all held together with simple cable ties. Reclaimed sheets were finished with a liquid glass varnish. Super easy, super effective.

Massive thanks to @babyciger and @berfinberber for the install 💛 by @celinetopsakal

@studio.barbare ‘s new library 😋

Designing the brief for the library was about modularity, growth, and easy assembly — creating a design language that uses local existing industries and translates them into design.

Tekirdağ has a big metal industry, specifically in steel. I worked with repurposed pieces — parts with stains or imperfections from production that would normally be discarded. I collaborated with Şahin Çelik, whose specialty is folding metal sheets to make gutters and truck storage units, and I adopted that technique for the library.

No welds — just folded pieces of metal, overlaid, drilled, and bolted together.

It’s made of five folded sheets that can be repurposed into racks or shelves, or even folded back flat depending on the studio’s needs.

This library is built from book references contributed each year by our artists-in-residence, curators, and public programme speakers. “For the record”, it’s also a way for the library to keep expanding!

I’ve been spending the past month in Rome as an award winner in architecture, funded by the Nicholas Boas Scholarship, in residence at @britishschoolatrome . My research, —𝑰𝒏𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒆𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚: 𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑬𝒙𝒄𝒂𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 — 𝑨𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒆𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑴𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒅𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝑰𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔, draws on references spanning social theory, physical anthropology, and material culture, enriched by the incredible resources of the BSR library and archive.

For now, I’m sharing some of the references and scans I’ve been working with — more of the work itself will follow soon.

A big thank you to Francesca Deli and Beatrice Celosia for their generous guidance in the library throughout my research. 🔗🔗 taken in British School at Rome by @celinetopsakal

We begin with the wall.

Across Ireland, the most pervasive built artefact is not the house, tower or church, but the wall. Linear, repetitive and everywhere, it divides fields and houses, follows winding roads and marks the land.

“Lá sa gclaí” (a day in the wall) is an Irish saying that describes farmers taking shelter beside stone walls when Atlantic rain stopped the day’s work. While waiting for the weather to pass, stories were shared. The wall became more than a boundary; it became a place of shelter and exchange.

Inspired by this phrase, twenty participants at EASA Seanchai spent two weeks making a wall from earth, sharing stories, knowledge and experiences along the way. The wall became a framework for gathering, hosting a communal meal, film screening, storytelling and a night beneath the stars.

The work now comes to Printworks Gallery, Galway, as part of the Architecture At The Edge Festival, where the wall becomes a setting for conversation and exchange.

Join us for an evening of dinner, discussion and music with our brilliant guest speakers Coili Collins, Celine Topsakal, Mary Laheen and Kate Hunter Hanley.

Barbare Studio’s second exhibition “Contact Zone,” curated by T. Melis Golar, opens on June 14 at Barbare Vineyards in Tekirdağ.

The term “Contact Zone” appears in literature and ethnography as a conceptual space where different cultures touch, clash, and transform one another. Under this title, we move inward, deeper, adding a new layer to our relationship with earth. We gather in the vineyards of Tekirdağ to listen to the life beneath the soil, what the atmosphere carries, and the stories of agents whose voices we rarely hear.

Artists / Sanatçılar : A. Serkan Aka, Action Pyramid, Ayça Ay, Egle Oddo, Elmas Deniz, Ezgi Kılınçaslan, Fırat Engin, İrem Apak, Kıymet Daştan, Orkan Telhan, Pınar Marul, Rozelin Akgün, Sinem Dişli, Tabita Rezaire, Yasemin Özcan

We are in Tekirdağ for the Kayda Değer Archive / Barınhan public program, taking place between September 11–21, working on spatial installations designed by @celinetopsakal. To support a model of local production and sustainability, we are continuing with leftover materials from last year and collaborating at the workshops of Salih and Uğur Usta in Yeni Sanayi. We are very excited that these designs will soon create gatherings around them in Istanbul! taken in Tekirdag by @celinetopsakal
