I am honored that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ®️ Zeta Rho Omega Chapter trusted me to lead our Sonja W. Garcia Image Award entry for the 73rd SARC. It took over a week, and one weekend (48 hours of no sleep) editing: pouring over thousands of photos and videos, assigning credits to every member who played a role, and recording my voice, narrating our presentation that could only be three minutes long. We had enough content to create a full length documentary. We earned 1st Runner-Up out of 190 entries. I’m humbled, grateful, and proud to showcase the excellence, service, and sisterhood of ZRO. Protecting Your Energy: Setting Boundaries for a Healthier You- A. Arenas

In a world that often demands more than we can give, it’s crucial to recognize the importance of not allowing others to deplete your resources and energy. Many of us have experienced situations where we give, give, and give, only to find ourselves drained, overwhelmed, and on the brink of health failure or mental exhaustion.

People can sometimes exploit our kindness and willingness to help, taking advantage of our generosity until we have nothing left. This can lead to feelings of resentment and burnout, as well as a profound sense of isolation. What’s worse is that after they’ve taken what they want, they may turn around and label us as “weak” or “inadequate,” when in reality, we were simply trying to be supportive.

Here are a few thoughts on why it’s essential to protect your energy:

1. Recognize Your Worth:
Understand that your time, energy, and resources are valuable. You are not obligated to give everything to everyone. Recognizing your worth helps establish a foundation for healthy boundaries.

2. Set Clear Boundaries: It’s okay to say no. Setting boundaries is not only a form of self-care but also a way to communicate your limits to others. Be clear about what you can and cannot do, and don’t feel guilty for prioritizing your well-being.

3. Evaluate Relationships: Take a step back and assess your relationships. Are they reciprocal? Do they uplift you, or do they drain you? Surround yourself with people who respect your boundaries and appreciate your contributions without taking advantage of them.
