A West Coast “serial songsmith” will bring original music from his long career to Nanaimo as part of Unity Vancouver Island’s Bright Lights concert series.
Bruce Coughlan, an award-winning vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, storyteller and songwriter, will play Brechin United Church on Saturday, May 24.
According to a news release, Coughlan writes songs that reflect the roads he has travelled in his long career making music.
“With five decades of experience under his belt, Bruce has emerged as a solo artist whose eclectic mix of original roots-based songs are honest, timeless and authentic. His storytelling is intriguing, matched by his expressive voice and masterful guitar work,” the press release said.
Coughlan is the voice of Celtic band Tiller’s Folly alongside his solo work. He has written hundreds of songs exploring the history, people and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.
“His solo work reflects a rich tapestry of life experience, poetic insight, and deep musicality, offering audiences a powerful connection through song. Bruce Coughlan brings authenticity, emotion and craft to every performance,” the press release said. by @celticrootscanada

Canadian folk-trio Tiller’s Folly has been weaving stories and melodies for nearly three decades. With their latest EP, Way Out West, the British Columbia-based band continues to capture the essence of their roots while exploring new horizons.

“I am a sixth-generation Canadian of Irish descent,” shares frontman and songwriter Bruce Coughlin via email from his home in Maple Ridge, BC. “Deep down in my heart, I have always believed that music would be my destiny. As a young child, I would walk around simply singing.”
By grade school, he had picked up the ukulele and upright bass – both self-taught – later learning the guitar before leaving home to go out on the road and ply his trade as a musician.

Fast forward 50 years, and Coughlin remains just as committed to his craft.
“I’ve never really considered any other pursuit…”
