Life in prison for felony murder with no malice !

Each day that passes I replay how I ended up behind these walls, confined by my a system that's punitive. I have fought for programs as I'm not on any priority list seeing I have no out date. Although the system is designed to by pass me I have completed as many programs as I could. The visual effect of my situation is surreal. Not one day that passes I don't reflect on what could of should had been in my life as well as my parents lives, kid and grandkids. I have feared the inevitable, my kids following me behind the walls of a unforgiving system. My youngest son did just what I feared. He was convicted of a firearms charge and sentence to a house of correction term of one year. I blame my absence in his life, my failures as a parent, my lack of self awareness as a young man because of lack of knowledge wisdom and understanding of myself in my mid 20's... Now in a couple of months I will be 61 year old. I have successfully succeeded and deterring a generation of other youth by following in my foot steps by writing countless letters, phone calls and visits to nieces, nephew cousins and friends as well on the dangers of the involving prison environment informing them that theirs another way to go.

I only pray in silence that one day my failures will become deterrents for the youth that still till this day look up to me for guidance and strength that they too can make out of their circumstances to achieve in some cases the unachievable. Although I am incarcerated physically, my spirit and hopes to one day be free to see my kids, grandkids & parents before they parish this earth in the real world is my only dream come true, In this I pray. I have been incarcerated for 25 years under the Joint Venture Doctrine. My heart goes out to the victim and their family. I did not kill anyone nor did I orchestrate the plan to carry out such a violent act. I was convicted as the only black man and sentenced to die in prison under this theory.
This has destroyed not only my hope, my life, my future but that of family too. I, along with them, live my life over securus, a video visit and a few times an in person visit. I have missed the opportunity to see my daughter grow, graduate and watch the psychological effect it has had on her without a father. I miss holidays, birthdays and the ability to have rocked my baby to sleep. The events I have missed are insurmountable.

My wife had to raise, support and be a mother and father. This is devastating to her, to me and to our daughter. As a man, I am supposed to take care of my wife and daughter, not the wife who takes care of the daughter and is financially responsible for all. The burden on families is devastating.

I suffer from sickle cell anemia and my health is deteriorating. I am also deaf and suffer from glaucoma (legally blind).

I respectfully request that this legislation and the State of Massachusetts support second chances and vote in favor of giving a second chance. While I accept accountability for my former lifestyle, I did not commit a murder. I believe 25 years of punishment is enough. I am not the young man I was 25 years ago.

I hope all who is reading will support all those women and men incarcerated under the joint venture theory and help bring us home.

For nearly 17 years, I have been incarcerated under the Joint Venture Doctrine.

First, I want to acknowledge the victim and the pain this tragedy caused. I carry deep remorse for the loss of life and for everyone affected.

I have always maintained that I was fighting for my life that day. I never intended for anyone to die. Yet I was convicted under the Joint Venture Doctrine and sentenced to life without parole.

This sentence has affected far more than me. It has taken me away from my family for nearly 17 years. I have missed birthdays, holidays, milestones, and countless everyday moments. My loved ones have had to maintain our relationships through phone calls, video visits, letters, and a few hours of in person visits.

The man I am today is not the young man I was nearly 17 years ago. Time, reflection, and accountability have changed me. I am asking to be seen for the person I have become, not only for the worst day of my life.

I respectfully ask you to support legislation that gives those serving life sentences under the Joint Venture Doctrine a meaningful second chance. People change. Redemption is real. No one should be sentenced to die in prison without hope.
