Finally completed. The Bowen Memorial Methodist Church, a historic heritage building located in Colaba, South Mumbai, India.The church was dedicated in 1889 in memory of the Reverend George Bowen, a prominent missionary.It is known for its distinct Gothic Revival architecture, featuring a red-roofed tower and balconies, set against a modern skyscraper. Although most of my postings are my watercolor paintings, I once in a while post my astro-photography observations. I tried a watercolor version of “Bapin del Lilela” by the Italian artist Telemaco Signorini, created around 1895. The curious cat Minou wished to be in my reproduction. ——————————————————————
Signorini was a key figure in the Macchiaioli group, a movement in Florence that acted as forerunners to French Impressionism. Maiden’s Tower, İstanbul. Painted in Datça, Türkiye 20-April-2026. ===================================Boğaz’ın güney girişindeki küçük bir adacıkta yer alan Kız Kulesi, 2000 yılı aşkın bir geçmişe sahip, katmanlı bir tarihe ev sahipliği yapıyor. Kökenleri genellikle antik Yunan dönemine, İstanbul’a giren deniz trafiğini kontrol eden bir gümrük istasyonu ve savunma karakolu olarak hizmet verdiği döneme dayandırılıyor. Bizans döneminde yeniden inşa edilerek gözetleme kulesi ve deniz feneri olarak kullanılırken, Osmanlı döneminde karantina istasyonu ve askeri karakol gibi çeşitli roller üstlendi. Kule aynı zamanda efsanelerle de çevrili; en ünlüsü ise kehanet edilen bir yılan ısırığından korunmak için orada tutulan bir prensesin, kaderin onu yakalamasıyla ilgili hikaye. Bugün Kız Kulesi, tarih, mitoloji ve şehrin panoramik manzaralarını harmanlayan İstanbul’un en önemli sembollerinden biridir.

The Kız Kulesi (Maiden’s Tower) stands on a small islet at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus and has a layered history stretching back over 2,000 years. Its origins are often traced to the ancient Greek period, when it served as a customs station and defensive outpost controlling maritime traffic into Istanbul. During the Byzantine era, it was rebuilt and used as a watchtower and lighthouse, while in Ottoman times it took on various roles including a quarantine station and military post. The tower is also wrapped in legend—most famously the tale of a princess kept there to protect her from a prophesied snakebite, only for fate to catch up with her. Today, Kız Kulesi is one of Istanbul’s most iconic symbols, blending history, myth, and panoramic views of the city. ============================= #watercolor_artist
