Posting PC & available cards with strong eye-appeal. Talking cards on @toploadedpodcast - A sportscard podcast for collectors and investors.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Before he became Mr. October, Reggie Jackson was a young Oakland A, with lightning in his bat and a legendary career ahead.

563 home runs. 14 All-Star selections. 5 World Series championships. 2 World Series MVPs. And, 3 Homeruns on 3 consecutive pitches in Game 6 of the 1977 World Series, cementing his legend as Mr. October.

His 1969 Topps rookie is one of the defining cards of the decade, with its simple design, classic portrait, and baby blue background.

I passed on a centered PSA 6 a couple years back, and have regretted it since. When I saw this centered 4 at the recent Philly Show, I wasn’t going to miss again. At some point, I’ll upgrade for my PC copy, but finding Reggie’s rookie centered and with strong color ‘ain’t easy.

Nolan Ryan’s move from the Mets to the Angels unlocked one of the greatest pitching careers in baseball history.

You can argue a high walk rate, but if you don’t give up hits or runs, and strike everyone else out…and do it for 27 years…it becomes legend.

When Nolan got to the Angles, he corrected a mechanical issue and went from 127 Ks with the Mets in ‘71 to a league leading 329 in ‘72, also posting a 2.28 ERA and 19 wins.

This 1972 Topps card with its iconic look and Ryan’s airbrushed hat are pure vintage gold, and mark the transition from a young Mets pitcher-of-promise to The Ryan Express and No Hit King.

The centering, color and image sharpness take this copy to a special place for me, and make it tough to imagine finding a better, higher grade copy.

Are you a collector, investor…both?

Here’s a bullseye for you 🎯

The Player: Hank Aaron - On the Mt. Rushmore of baseball greats.
• 755 HR
• 2,297 RBI (Record)
• 6,856 Total Bases (Record)
• .305 Ave
• 3,771 Hits
• 2,174 Runs

The Set: Iconic 50s design, circular player images surrounded by big color, lower-case player names, and anchored by Bob Gibson’s RC, Mantle, Mays, Clemente and Koufax.

The Card: Aaron won the AL Batting title with his highest season Ave .355. This was his 6th Topps card.

The Rarity: PSA total Pop 6,925

10 - 1
9 - 27
8 - 348
7 - 601

With white borders and an immediate transition to bold coloring, centering is key to eye-appeal on the ‘59s. So too is the quality of the color, followed by registration (image sharpness) and the absence of PD. This copy’s rarity lays in the unusually strong eye-appeal.

The Price: I paid roughly 5% over comps. A huge win from an investment perspective, and reasonable to add a stunner like this to my A-List HOFer run.

1954 Topps - one of the hobby’s iconic sets, anchored by the Hank Aaron rookie, and bookended by Ted Williams at No 1 and 250.

And, there’s some cool hobby history here. Topps and Bowman were battling for player rights, and Bowman ultimately had to withdraw its 1954 Ted Williams card after losing the rights to Williams. Mickey Mantle to Bowman, Teddy Ballgame to Topps.

The Williams card No 1 is a condition challenge. Often sitting on top of collectors’ set stacks meant taking the brunt of rubber bands, handling and wear. With added centering and print issues, finding a survivor in great condition is really tough.

With a PSA pop count of just 446, only 388 graded higher, and factory issues that often sneak into higher grades, this centered gem ranks very high on the overall eye-appeal list.

A gem of a gem.

Another gift from the @thephillyshow. A great example of rarity within grade.

When eye-appeal within grade can range so far, it’s so important to buy the card.

Of the 695 PSA graded 7s, how many do think look like this or better?

Sometimes the auto makes the card.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has signed plenty of autographs over the years, but finding his full-name signature, on-card, is not easy.

PSA’s auto research says that he typically signs “Abdul-Jabbar,” occasionally “Kareem,” and rarely his full name.

This 1971 Topps issue is one of my favorite vintage designs, and this one has good eye appeal, a mid grade of 4…and most importantly, a well-placed, full-name auto that earned a 10.

And my favorite part?…The card says Lew Alcindor, but the auto is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. For me, it highlights a key period in US history where athletes were advocating for their right to identify with whatever group, religion, or name they wanted to. America - Land of the Free.

What do you think…full name auto or a variation of it?

Flew up to @thephillyshow to see what all the vintage hype was about. Now I know 😎

Huge, well run show, with a ton of vintage for all card pursuits. Dropped off close to 200 slabs with Drew @gregmorriscards and continued my sharpened focus on higher grade, strong eye-appeal gems.

Found this Teddy Ballgame on my last pass before my flight out - what a way to end a couple days of connecting, collecting and living the card-life at an iconic show.

I’ll post some of my 22 pickups over time, but for now, I’m enjoying this masterpiece of a ‘56 Ted, and nerding out on cleaning, re-sleeving, and inventorying my new beauts.

🎶 It Don’t Come Easy 🎶

That pretty much sums up finding a 1969 Topps Wilt Chamberlain with the eye appeal I was looking for.

The iconic Tall Boys are notoriously condition sensitive. Centering, especially L - R, is a challenge throughout the set, and the oversized cards weren’t exactly built for surviving 57 years with clean edges and corners. Add in the bold colors and white background, and flaws don’t have many places to hide.

Then there’s Wilt. Card No. 1 in the set, which meant it often sat right on top of collectors’ stacks and took more abuse than most.

So while this one is “only” a PSA 6, the grade isn’t really what drew me to it. It’s the presentation. Strong centering, clean white background, great color and an image of one of the most dominant athletes in the history of sports.

For vintage, I’ll take eye appeal over the number on the flip every time.

Topps Chrome Black: Gold Refractor Auto — 01/50 ⭐️

Got this beauty a few years ago when I was hunting Mattingly’s uniform No. 23 serial-numbered auto cards.

It wasn’t 23/50, but I might actually like it better. It’s not just the front bookend at 01/50, but it’s also the only PSA 10 Auto from the run.

Happy to keep this tucked in the PC or move it to another Mattingly collector’s PC.

DM if interested.

The 1961 home run chase between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle was one of the first great baseball stories that grabbed me as a kid.

Reading, then watching Ken Burns’ “Baseball” and reading about that summer transported me 1961 to live two Yankee teammates chasing Babe Ruth’s seemingly untouchable 60 from 1927.

Mantle ended at 54. Maris pushed forward alone and got to 61.

That’s why this 1962 Topps Home Run Leaders card has always been on my must-have list for the PC. It captures one of the most famous home run chases in baseball history on a single card.

And finding one like this isn’t easy. High-grade copies with strong eye appeal and good centering don’t surface often.

So when this card of beautiful floating heads showed up looking like this, I grabbed it 😂

PSA Pop: 248 ⭐️
Higher: 29
PSA 10s: 0

If you could own ONE card that represents the 1961 home run chase, or a moment in sports history, what would it be?

From Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young…You, who are on the road, must have a code, that you can live by.

I laughed this morning when listening to this song because when I’m on the road, going to shows, I always remind myself to live by my code of collecting and investing.

I love almost all cards, so the collector in me is happy to own a lot, lol, but to make sure my collecting didn’t turn into hoarding (which it’s tried to at times), I created a few rules.

I’m always open to adding to my “core” PC with Mattingly, Nolan Ryan, and iconic errors. With these cards, I don’t care if they go to $0. But, to stay financially responsible and thoughtful about my family after I’ve gone to the Iowa cornfield, I try to buy smart.

1. Player: All-time GOAT
2. Set: Iconic & collected
3. Card: RC, significant year or event
4. Scarcity: Rarity of card, grade/condition & eye-appeal
5. Value: Price relative to short, mid, long-term sale.

When I see a Gretzky rookie that looks like this one does, at comps, I buy it. My “code” shortens my decision time and gives me a repeatable process that’s worked for me for a very long time.
