One of our most unique in-person workshops yet!

In this single-session workshop, taught by instructor Julian Silverman, participants will reimagine a centuries-old process that transforms discarded materials into functional media. The group will begin with the investigation of chemical interactions between organic compounds (e.g., tea, oak leaves, or acorns) and scrap metals. You will then participate in guided experimentation to formulate and refine your own ink, observing how variations in waste sources and preparation methods influence color, texture, and drying properties. And along the way, the group will consider the historical evolution of ink and pigment-making and discuss how circular and regenerative practices can renew traditional craft in the context of contemporary art and design.

For anyone who enjoys the process of investigation, experimentation, consideration and discussion!

"Paper Cuts: Independent Publishing in the United States, 2000-2025 " is on view at Center for Book Arts!

The exhibition will draw from over 600 zines and small-press publications gathered and researched by Christopher Kardambikis over the past decade. Three guest curators have lent their own perspective to the exhibition, with reading tables centered around queer publishing, Black-led editorial platforms, and DIY print networks.

We would like to highlight Jake Nussbaum’s Rhythm Book, which uses the 2 fundamental components of rhythm, silence and sound, to explore ten fundamental rhythms of the universe. A deck of cards accompanies the book which can be used to create rhythms in different meters and create endless combinations of patterns and ideas. by @centerforbookarts

Please join us at the Center for Book Arts on November 9 at 7:00 pm for the upcoming BookTalk: "Curious Matter: Exhibitions, Books, and the Practice of Inquiry," an in-person conversation with artists Raymond E. Mingst and Arthur Bruso, who are the founders and co-directors of Curious Matter, an exhibition and project space they established in Jersey City in 2007. Growing from their individual art practices and shared interests in cabinets of curiosities, museology, and art as a point of departure for inquiry, Curious Matter brings artists, writers, and audiences into conversation through exhibitions, publications, and public programs. Books and printed matter have been integral to its work from the beginning, from exhibition catalogues and artist monographs to broadsides and publications that extend the life and ideas of an exhibition.

Have an idea for a zine or small publication but not sure where to start? This four-session bootcamp taught by instructor Christina Long walks you through the full arc of independent publishing, from print production and binding to pricing, distribution, and the politics of making work outside mainstream channels.

Over four sessions, students will print one complete zine, develop a concept and prototype for an original small-press, and build a practical publishing plan. The bootcamp concludes with each student presenting their final zine concept and prototype to the group.

Along the way, we'll lightly explore the current landscape of independent publishing, including how AI tools and censorship pressures are reshaping what it means to protect your creative work on your own terms.

No prior bookmaking or publishing experience required, sign up today!

Celebrate the spooky season with a pocketful of cryptids! Join master paper engineer and CBA instructor Shawn Sheehy in exploring five pure pop-up strategies.

Using a kit of pre-cut pieces and a small set of simple hand tools, students will build tiny structures in 2" x 2" folios and then house their collection in a novel adhesive-free box. Beginners will appreciate the simplicity of these structures, while more advanced artists will enjoy exploring new ways to apply foundational structure.

In just two sessions, students will explore small cryptids that increase in size, and then apply those strategies to five of our most famous cryptids: the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, a unicorn, a bridge troll, and a dragon. Don't miss out on one of our favorite workshops of the semester!

Wow, what a buzzy weekend! We proved that no weather could stop our love of artists’ books.

Yes, we had a very full table at the CBA booth, maybe even a little overwhelming at first glance. But that abundance was true to us. There’s always so much happening at Center for Book Arts: workshops to take, exhibitions to explore, books to discover, and many ways to get involved in our community.

Our goal at NYABF wasn’t simply to sell books. More than anything, we wanted to share a little of the energy and spirit behind CBA, and hopefully inspire you to come experience it for yourself.

CBA is a place for anyone curious about book arts, whether you’ve been making books for years or have never made one before. Come visit us, see what’s happening, and maybe even make a book of your own. ❤️
