From the Hood to the Woods is about determination.

Determining our relationship to the land. Determining our relationship to one another. Determining who we’re becoming.

You plant. You fail. You learn.
You build. You disagree. You regroup.
You return to the land, and it asks something different of you than you expected.

For Black and Indigenous communities, this journey is shaped by generations of being systematically denied land, access, and the knowledge to steward it. Even with a deep understanding of that history, deprogramming ourselves takes time.

So we keep returning—to the land, to one another, and to the work. taken in Enfield, New York by @centernuleadership

The land demands a different kind of knowledge.

At NuLegacy, self-sustainability isn’t an idea. It’s a practice. Reading maps. Starting fires. Building shelter. Running equipment. Working the land. Learning to adapt when the rain, snow, wind, or terrain has other plans.

The skills add up. But so does something deeper: an understanding that we aren’t separate from nature, and we aren’t always in control of it.

That’s part of the education too.

NuLegacy is building people who know how to build, grow, adapt, and sustain. 🌱 taken in Enfield, New York by @centernuleadership

It’s one thing to have a vision. It’s another to put it into practice.

For Chino, reconnecting with the outdoors became the next phase of his healing journey. What began as a vision grew through experience, learning, and a commitment to keep showing up.

NuLegacy grew from that journey—a belief that reconnecting with the land can help us reconnect with ourselves, our communities, and the generations that follow.

From Brooklyn to Ithaca, NY. From the hood to the woods.

Building NuLegacy through Human Justice, healing, and collective liberation.

The annual Farming for Freedom Trail event was a powerful reminder that the work of liberation is rooted in our history, strengthened through community, and carried forward through collective action.

As we walked, reflected, and connected, we honored the footsteps of those who came before us while continuing to build pathways toward healing, justice, and self-determination.

At NuLegacy, we believe that remembering our history is more than looking back. It is about reclaiming our stories, reconnecting with the land, strengthening our communities, and creating a future grounded in freedom.

A special thank you to Khuba International for curating this magical Freedom Trail experience every year and creating space for connection, reflection, and transformation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on the trail and continues to build this legacy with us. taken in Ithaca, New York by @centernuleadership

We inherit more than history. We inherit the responsibility to keep building.

Our ancestors understood that freedom had to be rooted in something tangible—in land, nourishment, ownership, community, and the power to determine our own futures.

In 1969, Fannie Lou Hamer founded the Freedom Farm Cooperative in Mississippi, creating a community-led model that grew food, created employment, and helped families build greater economic security and self-sufficiency.

At NuLegacy, we continue in that tradition—honoring what our ancestors planted by cultivating spaces where our people can heal, grow, build, and belong.

The vision was never only survival. It was self-determination. And the work continues. 🌱✊🏾

What we grow doesn’t just feed us — it heals us. Swipe through to see what’s ripening right now and what each one does for your body. 🍅🫑 taken in Ithaca, New York by @centernuleadership

Today we blessed the day with each other’s company, presence and energy. 💜

We began at Je T’aime, a Black-owned bakery in Bed-Stuy and our new partner for upcoming community pop-up workshops, sharing breakfast and sharing ourselves — our names, ages, schools, interests, stories and even horoscope signs. ✨

T of Future Allies shared her journey and the roots of her deep commitment to caring for and building community.

Then came the surprises: T gifted every school-aged child $300 CASH for school and educational needs, followed by a trip to SNIPES, where each young person chose a new pair of shoes. 👟

But the day was about more than money or shopping. It was an exercise in valuing and sharing.

We can critique capitalism while also being honest about the material needs our families have. How we share resources with one another can itself be an act of care, dignity and community.

That is part of the Human Justice ethos: creating experiences that help us relate to time, resources and one another with intention and attention.

For our young people, these moments become reference points:

You matter. Your needs matter. Your dreams matter. You belong.

As we build emotional, social, financial and spiritual resources together, we plant seeds for new connections, new possibilities and new ways of sharing with others.

Some call it paying it forward.

We call it building the Village. 💜

Deep gratitude to T, Mr. T of Future Allies and Je T’aime for building with us. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @centernuleadership

There’s something powerful about preparing a meal with food you watched grow from the ground up. 🌱

At NuLegacy Farms, growing food is also about growing knowledge—understanding where our food comes from, learning how to care for the land, and experiencing what it means to nourish ourselves and one another.

This fall, the harvest is making its way from the garden into the kitchen, turning months of care into meals shared with community. 🌶️🥒🧄

Partnership takes root when we learn, build, and care for the land together. 🌱

Our growing relationship with Viva Acres is creating more opportunities for the NuLegacy community to gain hands-on experience with farming, land stewardship, animals, tools, and the many living systems that make a farm thrive.

Whether building something the farm needs, learning why an overgrown patch of grass can actually be a future food source, or stopping to examine a new insect along the way, each visit creates space for curiosity, practical skills, and a deeper connection to the land.

And the exchange goes both ways. Our team contributes to real projects at Viva Acres while the farm opens its doors, shares knowledge, and gives our community the opportunity to experience rural life firsthand.

As Viva Acres shared: “Working together creates a meaningful exchange.”

That spirit of exchange is what makes partnerships like this powerful. We’re excited to keep learning together, contributing together, and seeing where this growing partnership takes us. 🌾🐓 taken in Ithaca, New York by @centernuleadership
