After a recent training session, grizzly bear Luna was given an ice block treat filled with ‘bear chow’ as a reward. Luna needs to lick, bite, and claw, to access the food inside, which are natural foraging behaviors. by @centralparkzoo

We should always celebrate bats, but especially during Bat Appreciation Month! Some bat species are pollinators and help spread seeds for many plants, including avocados and mangoes.

Tropic Zone Intern Malachi helps the keepers with diet prep and enrichment activities, including making fruit skewers for our Seba’s short-tailed bats. This enrichment encourages the bats’ natural foraging behaviors. The video shows them enjoying this tasty treat.

Come hang out in the Tropic Zone to see our beautiful Seba’s short-tailed bats! by @centralparkzoo

These photos show Vet Tech Christina taking great care while removing post op sutures from this smoky jungle frog. Because amphibian skin is incredibly fragile and highly permeable, this is an extremely delicate procedure. Standard absorbable sutures do not break down efficiently in amphibians, meaning they must be manually removed with extreme precision once the wound has healed. Amazing job, Christina!

There’s a new gecko in the Tropic Zone! New Caledonian giant geckos are found exclusively on New Caledonia islands in the South Pacific. They are the world’s largest gecko species. When threatened, they can detach and later regenerate their tails. They inhabit the high canopies of rainforests in the southern and eastern portions of the main island, as well as several of the smaller surrounding islands.

Our puffin colony recently gained a new addition! On August 4, an Atlantic puffin chick, commonly known as a puffling, hatched at the zoo. The chick is currently being hand-reared in an off-exhibit holding area and is doing well.

As hatchlings, pufflings have puffy, brown and white downy feathers. At this stage, the puffling is still molting downy feathers before it grows its adult plumage and begins to learn to swim. In about a month, we will reintroduce the chick to the colony in the Polar Circle. Stay tuned for more puffling updates! by @centralparkzoo

Happy World Red Panda Day! Did you know 90% of a red panda’s diet consists of bamboo shoots and leaves? Because bamboo is hard to digest, red pandas need to eat around 20 to 30 percent of their body weight in bamboo per day! There are two subspecies of red panda: Western and Styan’s. The red pandas at Central Park Zoo are Western red pandas. They are slightly smaller and their coats are lighter in color than Styan’s red pandas. Come and check them out this fall!
