EXHIBITION | 12–19 July 2026 at @centro.comporta

“TERRA DA LUZ” - a Contemporary Art Exhibition on Earth, Matter and Light

“Terra da Luz” brings together ceramics, sculpture, painting and design objects in a quiet exploration of earth, matter and light.

Set within the luminous landscape of Comporta, the exhibition reflects on transformation through material, texture and form. Clay lies at its core, while the abstract paintings of Alex Kuznetsov introduce a complementary language of surface, rhythm and spatial depth.

Together, the works create a contemplative dialogue where earth becomes art, material becomes memory, and light reveals the quiet beauty of form.

Introducing: Jacira Da Conceição (b. 1990, Cape Verde) lives and works between Cape Verde and Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal.

Jacira Da Conceição is an artist and researcher whose practice spans ceramics, textiles, and found objects. Rooted in Cape Verdean traditions and Afro-descendant knowledge, her work explores nature, spirituality, femininity, and materiality. Through ceramics, she forges a physical and symbolic link with the land, using elemental forces and circular forms that evoke the female body and cycles of life. Conceição sees clay as a living body and a vessel of connection, describing the pot as a communal object that unites people through the shared earth. In her own words: “The pot is a place that unites people, that passes from hand to hand, made of earth, the same earth that carries us.”

—————————————————————————————

Ar (2022)
Ceramic and engobes
185cm

“Ar,” meaning “air” in Portuguese, evokes movement and fluidity, qualities also present in @daconceicaojacira ‘s sculpture. The artwork, organic in its form and colour, is composed of circular shapes, echoed in various configurations across the composition. The circle as a shape also imitates the movement of air; it is inherently cyclical and circular in motion, whether in the vast loops of atmospheric circulation or in the intimate rhythm of the human body. The circle, a symbol of femininity and unity, resonates in “Ar,” its curves recalling the body of a woman. In this way, the sculpture not only mirrors organic forms but also reflects the cyclical, interconnected forces that sustain existence.

African Garden (2023)
Pigment, acrylic and oil on Chinese rice paper
232 cm x 348 cm

In “African Garden”, René Tavares created a polyptych of blooming cotton flowers that, at first glance, captivate with their delicate, organic shapes, and gestural brushstrokes. Yet beyond their beauty lies a deeper cultural and historical weight. The flowers, fragmented and framed, allude to the violent legacy of cotton, a crop tied to slavery and among the most exploitative commodities in human history. Harvesting cotton created strong physical distress, as workers were forced into constant bending and exposed to cuts from the sharp, hardened pericarps of the bolls. By presenting the cotton bolls untouched yet framed, Tavares transforms them into charged symbols, being potent reminders of suffering, resilience, and the turbulent histories that continue to shape the present.

—————————————————————————————

Introducing: René Tavares (b. 1983, São Tomé and Príncipe) lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal.

René Tavares is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in painting and expanded through photography, video, and installation. He investigates identity, memory, and post-colonial legacies within African contexts. Drawing on archival, ancestral, and contemporary references, the artist creates layered figurative works that capture intimate rituals and collective histories, often engaging the viewer through direct gazes. His compositions reflect the complex relationship between land and people, questioning neglected legacies of violence and disruption. Across evolving series, Tavares bridges geographies and cultures, challenging fixed categories while advocating resilience and social empowerment.

—————————————————————————————
