Through our programs and services, we foster understanding of Latinx experiences & create opportunities for all Spartans to learn and succeed together

POSTS STORIES REELS

Join us in recognizing Latinx Heritage Month (September 15-October 15). This year’s theme, La Cultura Cura (Culture Heals), recognizes how culture grounds us, strengthens connections, and supports well-being. Through traditions, stories, music, art, food, and language, culture carries knowledge across generations and fosters belonging and care.

All SJSU community members are welcome to participate in these events as we come together to honor, learn and celebrate.

For Valeria Medina and Monica Garibay, @centro_sjsu is more than a campus resource. It is a place to find belonging, celebrate culture and support students with shared experiences. Through mentorship, advocacy and community, they are helping fellow Spartans find their place and thrive at SJSU.

At Centro, their experiences become support for others, from helping first-generation students navigate campus resources to mentoring students as they build confidence, join clubs and grow into their own identities.

We’re grateful to Dr. Esteban García Bravo, Assistant Professor of Digital Media Art & Spatial Art in SJSU’s Department of Art & Art History, for helping bring Centro’s student gallery back to life. With his mentorship, a group of students developed and curated Nuestro Sueño Americano / Our American Dream, an exhibit celebrating the creativity, culture, and experiences of SJSU students. The exhibit features artwork by 12 student artists and will be on display at Centro throughout the year.

This exhibit continues a gallery vision Centro began in 2019 with Aquí Estamos y No Nos Vamos, curated by Art Department faculty member Eliana Cetto. We’re thankful to Dr. García Bravo and our students for helping carry that vision forward.

Join us today, Wednesday, September 23, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. in Student Union Room 1340 to meet the artists and celebrate their work. Light refreshments will be provided.
