CALL FOR MURALISTS | SERPIENTE-INSPIRED MURAL

šŸ”— Apply through the link in our bio.

Centro Cultural de la Raza was established in 1971 by San Diego Chicana/o/x artists and activists who demanded a cultural space in Balboa Park where they could produce and exhibit art directly controlled by Chican@s and in service of the Chican@ community.

The exterior and interior walls of the building are decorated with the very murals created by Chican@ artists and activists during that time. However, only one of Centro’s existing muralsā€”ā€œSun Faceā€ by Antonia Perez—is credited to a woman-identified artist.

In March 2026, the International Women’s Day organizing committee at Centro Cultural de la Raza held a fundraiser with the goal of one day commissioning women-identified and gender-nonbinary artists to design and paint a serpiente-inspired mural on the building’s new wood skirt.

We are excited to announce that the time has come! We are currently seeking muralists to submit proposals for this project.

Women-identified and gender-nonbinary muralists are strongly encouraged to apply.

Actualment by @centrocultural

AGARRA LA ONDA!
Selections from Centro’s Collection

ON VIEW SEPTEMBER 5 – OCTOBER 4, 2026
Centro Cultural de la Raza

In commemoration of the Chicano/a artists who have shaped the cultural, political, and community life of the Centro, Agarra la Onda honors Chicano/a art as a practice of cultural memory, resistance, spirituality, and political consciousness.

Inspired by David Avalos’ Ofrenda exhibition at Galería Posada in Sacramento (1985), this exhibition presents selected works from the Centro’s private collection, including photography, prints, paintings, and other visual expressions.

Agarra la Onda is a call to understand our history, identity, and the political realities affecting our communities. Through art, we remember, resist, and imagine possibilities for our collective future.

The Centro is our community home, a living archive and a pillar of our ofrenda de conciencia.
