WilmingtoNColor and Coming to the Table present the 1898 Family Reunion & Healing Festival on November 7th, 2026, from 1–5 p.m. at Chowtown.

The gathering is designed to reconnect descendants of the people who lived, worked, worshiped, operated businesses and raised families in Wilmington before and during the 1898 Massacre and Coup (the only successful government overthrow to ever be carried out on US soil during November of 1898)

Families connected to victims, survivors, displaced residents and perpetrators are invited to come together for an afternoon centered on historical truth, remembrance, reconciliation and healing. Bruh 😭 last week Lamar Odom was in town speaking at an event.

Before it was time for him to speak, he wanted to take a quick smoke break 🚬. So this man scans the ENTIRE room… looks past everybody… then walks straight up to ME.

Lamar Odom: “Yo, you got a lighter?”

Now anybody who knows me KNOWS… 9 times outta 10, I got a lighter.

BUT OF COURSE THIS HAD TO BE THE ONE TIME I DIDN’T. 😭😭😭

Man… when I tell you I felt like I had just let the entire Lakers organization down. 😂

I’m standing there looking at Lamar Odom like I just missed TWO FREE THROWS with 0.4 seconds left in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. 😭

Kobe somewhere looking down like:

“Ced… you had ONE JOB.” 🤦🏾‍♂️🏀

I ain’t been able to forgive myself since. 😂😂😂

Of all the days to leave the lighter at home… I chose the day a TWO-TIME NBA CHAMPION needed me to come off the bench.

What an incredible experience in Norfolk, VA during the 111th Annual ASALH CONFERENCE
This was my first time attending speaking and presenting at the ASALH Conference but hopefully not the last

A special thank you to everyone who joined me on the panel @cltblackhistorytour @carolina_rarity and Haley
I’m grateful for the knowledge, perspectives, and experiences each panelist brought to the conversation.

And an even bigger thank you to everyone who showed up and filled the room to listen, ask questions, engage, and support us. A great panel is only as powerful as the conversation it creates, and our audience made this experience so special the A/V tech guy had to tell us to”wrap it up”

For years, we’ve been doing the work of telling stories that deserve to be remembered, creating experiences around that history, building partnerships, and demonstrating that preserving Black history can also create real cultural and economic value.

Being able to bring that work to ASALH felt like another important milestone in the journey.

I left inspired, grateful, and even more committed to the work ahead.

The history may have been suppressed, but the impact doesn’t have to be. If you’re ever in Wilmington, NC check us out at www.WilmingtoNColor.com taken in Norfolk, Virginia by @ceocednc

From educators to decision makers man what a weekend, we hosted 50 teachers and 50 Black elected officials from across the state with @wilmingtoncolor !

For years, Wilmington’s history especially the stories of Black resilience, innovation, and the lasting impact of the 1898 Coup, has too often been overlooked. Our mission at WilmingtoNColor has never been to simply tell history. It’s to create an experience that changes how people understand a place, informs how they lead, and inspires conversations they carry back to their own communities.

When teachers leave with new ways to engage their students, and elected officials leave with a deeper understanding of how history shapes present-day policy and community development, the impact extends far beyond our 90-minute tour.

This weekend wasn’t just about hosting visitors. It was about equipping leaders with a richer understanding of North Carolina’s story and proving that heritage tourism can be a powerful tool for education, economic development, and civic engagement.

Thank you to every educator and elected official who spent part of your weekend with us. We look forward to continuing to welcome schools, universities, conferences, nonprofits, and organizations from across the country to experience Wilmington through a different lens.
