@cephas.azariah announces his second album, ‘conditions for observing light’. Coming September 3 on Anjunachill.

His 2024 debut LP ‘Joy Paradox’ drew on ambient and neoclassical influences, charting Cephas’ journey from India to the UK and the realisation that there is often no happiness without some sacrifice along the way.

On his follow-up, ‘conditions for observing light’, Cephas takes a similarly philosophical approach, exploring where radiance can be found in an increasingly dark world. Across 10 immersive tracks, he examines light in all its forms, from the natural energy of the sun and lightning, to the intimate glow of a candle and the cold gleam of artificial light.

Cephas invites exciting artists into his world on his new LP, which will include collaborations with @kidnapmusic, @yujinbaekk, @marshallusinger and @joshandsamwhoaretwins, with Josh and Sam featuring on today’s single ‘coherence’. A warm, upbeat track that reflects the gentle shift from spring into summer through rhythmic pianos and synths, this marks just the beginning…

making a slow record has its quirks too..

1. The best ideas don’t always announce themselves, you have to go find them. Could be a setting on one of the pedals or a filter on a synth or a counter melody that should be prominent. Try, try and try. Seek and you will find!

2. The moment I knew a song was finished was often quieter than anticipated. Somtimes an idea was developed into big journey, sometimes it stayed small and that was enough.

3. A song that took a year and one that took an hour to write can sit on the same album and no one can tell which is which. It doesn’t matter.

4. Fewer layers, more detail. Bring out as much personality from each sound as possible.

5. The audience for this genre of music might be a little smaller but they are present and here for it. Lean into that, show them as much of the process as you can.

A 40-minute ambient cinematic record.. in this economy??

Yes. Because I’ve always loved making records that give back instead of ones that demand something from you.

It is meant for deep listening and made to be lived with. For the ones that love sonic details and film scores. For the drive home. The afternoon muse. The 2am existential. The parts of your life that doesn’t seem like much now has a soundtrack.

If you’re the kind of person who still puts on an album and lets it play through — this one’s for you. I made it slow on purpose. I made it cinematic on purpose. This record rewards patience.
