War? Not fun. Fungi? Fun is in the name!

The world is bigger than war. Never forget that love is answer

I've made this a trial reel to reach more of you, beyond my diehard mushroom fan followers. Because the world needs more fun, funguys, and fungals. The summer of weird rare mushrooms continues

Brownflesh Bracket (posh name: coriolopsis gallica)

Inedible

This unusual fungus really didn't fit in with the norm, and wasn't an easy ID. It took fairly substantial rooting around to find a clear match. But FINALLY thanks to many other myconerds writing about fungus on the interwebs I not only found this rare shroom, but also found out its identity!

Only about 125 documented finds on inaturalist in the UK! This orangey brown fungus lives on fallen branches. The upper surface case coarse brown hair, as well as velvet like fuzz; it is quite unusual in that regard. The coarse hair is almost reminiscent of ozonium! The fungus can be resupinate or effused-reflexed with bracket like shelves, as here. The pore surface is greyish brown but discolours reddish brown in places, and the pores are angular with 4 to 6 sides - often becoming elongated and jagged with age

Certainly a new find for me, but the ID seems to fit well. If you think I'm wrong and have an alternative ID suggestion let me know in the comments

The Teardropper (posh name: cylindrobasidium laeve)

Inedible

A highly variable fungus that can be entirely resupinate, effused-reflexed, and rarely even pileate. Here we have a really wonderful effused-reflexed specimen. Salmon pink bumpy but poreless fertile surface, often with cracks when dry (and oh boy is the weather DRY). The upper surface is light ochre brown, zonate, and slightly fuzzy. Grows on deadwood fallen branches. Starts as disc shaped patches, but grows from there and these then merge into things that look like this impressive large specimen

Why is it called the Teardropper? It may shock you that it is not named after people weeping at its beauty. The real reason is because apparently the spores are tear shaped under microscopic evaluation

Ergot (Claviceps Species) seems to be everywhere right now

I don't know if since I visually unlocked it recently I'm just SEEING it for the first time everywhere - or if it is having a particularly good year due to the weather

As mentioned in my several recent posts... don't eat this. Please. It is toxic. It isn't edible. It is not a way to get high. Eating it a way to rapidly develop toxic syndromes affecting the nervous system and the vascular system. You could end up, for example, reaping 'St. Anthony's fire' which is delightful and heady mix of furious pain and gangrene made famous in medieval times

So, just find it and admire it

Leave the extracting and purifying and modifying the pharmocologically useful ergot alkaloids to the competent chemists making legitimate medicines for conditions like migraine.

Instead go eat some tasty gourmet mushrooms - I highly recommend giving a go at growing oyster mushrooms at home. They are easy, forgiving, delicious, and fun to grow. People like @jurassiccoastmushrooms have great quality grow kits - check them out

Chicken of the Woods (posh name: laetiporos sulphureus)

Edible, but not particularly great. A decent filler mushroom as normally you get a good haul, and soaks up other flavours well. Only worth it when young, supple, and moist. When old this becomes tough and grainy in texture and is not at all pleasant

Obviously, I like finding these because theh are yellow. More specifically they range from yellow to orange to pinkish orange. The pore surface though is usually yellow. When young they are like a dense moist sponge in texture. They grow directly from wood - many kinds. Prevalent in summer

Artist's Bracket (posh name: ganoderma applanatum)

Inedible

These ever present brackets are actively growing right now, and their pristine white porous surfaces are dropping copious amounts of cocoa brown spores. As you can see here, everything around the mushroom is dusted - even the top of the mushroom itself! The porous surface marks brown with friction. The upper surface is brown and concentrically ridged. They grow directly from wood

Here Ergot again! 😆

Having never found this ever before, despite looking for years, since finding it once this summer now I seem to have visually unlocked this fungus and keep finding it

Ergot (Claviceps Sp.) refers to a group of ascomycetes which infect grass flowers, and them form sclerotia in place of the seeds which would normally develop. Is this Claviceps Purpura? Don't know - and probably not possible to tell without genetic/microscopic analysis

These are toxic. Frighteningly toxic. Do not eat them. See my prior posts to learn about St. Anthony's Fire. Or at least Google it before yoh do something spectacularly dumb

The Ergot alkaloids within are super interesting, and pharmacologically active, and are used in medicines once extracted, purified, modified, etc. DO NOT EAT THE FUNGUS

Mushrooms can feel like a secret.

Especially in summer when they are few and far between. And then when you find them, sometimes they have a legit maze on them!

This is the Oak Mazegill (posh name: daedalea quercina)

Inedible

It has labyrinthine like PORES underneath with thick walls. The upper surface is a subtly zonate light ochre colour. They grow directly from oakwood

The posh name is an ode to the architect of the minotaur's labyrinthe; Daedalus

⚠️ 🍄 RARE mushroom alert 🍄 ⚠️

Found this glorious large bolete which didn't seem to give two hoots that it hasn't rained for weeks and that it has been a heatwave for most of that time too. That, and it's pale colour had my suspicions raised already... but therein lay the problem... to tell whether it was the rare one or the common one I'd have to fully slice it in half. Which I didn't want to do in the case of this gloriously intact mushroom if it was rare. Catch 22

So I did the best I could in the grubby light conditions. And was left, as expected, unstlatisfied between a definite ID of either a Rooting Bolete (posh name: caloboletus radicans; common) or Pale Bolete (posh name: butyriboletus fechtneri). Both have pale ochre-brown convex caps with flesh that turns blue with damage, with pale yellow small round pores that bruise blue, and club like chonky stems with yellow apices and often a bit of red on them. It did smell VERY porcini like though. So I suspected the rarer mushroom. Harrumph!

But I know that a mushroom like this, especially if the edible and reportedly delicious Pale Bolete (I've never eaten one; too rare), wouldn't last long at this size and degree of conspicuousness in this busy area for wildlife, dogs, and people. So I went back the next day

Sure enough it had been munched! Probably by a badger as that's what the poo looks like, and the mushroom.itself was growing in a little shallow pit... which could well be a little badger latrine! Anyway it had also been completely uprooted so I now felt completely justified in slicing it in half and it.did not disappoint. Pale bluing of the whitish mushroom flesh, stronger bluing above the tubes, and (importantly) carmine red staining in the core of the stem. Additionally I could get proper close-ups of the apex of the stem and you can clearly see a yellow apex with a red zone beneath, and thag this is covered with fine reticulated. This is clearly a Pale Bolete!

So, what have we learned? This badger has excellent taste in mushrooms, and a nose for the rare. I must make friends with it

Summer heat boiling your sanity due to lack of mushrooms? I assure you, they might be relatively few and far between but they are out there

Dryad's Saddle (posh name: cerioporus squamosus) is a summer staple. They can grow to a very large size, and are a delicious edible. They have large ochre flattish caps, covered in coarse flaky brown scales. The undersurface has large cream angular pores which are decurrent with the stem. The stems blacken at the base. The whole mushrooms smells of delicious watermelon rind. These grow directly from wood

I left these 2 to mush on
