The Story of Susi Huang & Cernamic

Cernamic Studio was founded by us — Nam and Susi — but behind the studio is a story that deserves to be told, especially Susi’s.

Susi Huang first discovered her love of art during her Foundation at Central Saint Martins, Back Hill. That experience led her to pursue a BA in Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martins, where ceramics became much more than a subject of study. It became a language through which she could express herself, connect with others and build something meaningful.

Over the years, Susi has given an enormous amount of herself to Cernamic. She has spent countless hours preparing studios, making work, supporting exhibitions, fulfilling commissions, helping with workshops and taking care of the many practical details that often remain unseen. Her contribution is woven into the everyday life of the studio — in the spaces she helps create, the work she makes and the care she brings to the people around her.

Susi is naturally shy and quiet. She does not always speak about how much she contributes, and her willingness to help can sometimes be overlooked. Yet her quietness should never be mistaken for a lack of strength. Her resilience is found in the way she continues to give her time, energy and creativity, even when the work is demanding and recognition is not guaranteed.

She has continued to show up — steadily, thoughtfully and with care.

Through every studio, project, event, commission and challenge, Susi has remained a vital part of Cernamic’s foundation. Her creative journey has unfolded alongside the studio itself, shaped by persistence, collaboration and a deep belief in the possibilities of ceramics.

Cernamic isn’t just a business we created. It is something we have built together through years of hard work, sacrifice, creativity and belief in what ceramics can mean to people.

Behind the classes, studios, projects and activity is someone whose patience, skill and dedication have helped hold it all together.

We smashed a ceramic piece on purpose, then rebuilt it with gold at a kintsugi workshop at @cernamic

• Throwing off a hump ( making small forms from one large piece of clay)
• Using a chuck for trimming and making your own
• Throwing larger forms and creating simple combined forms
• Exploring surface decoration
• Glazing your finished pieces

🏺 Queer Potters: 6-Week Beginners Course

I’m teaching a 6-week beginner’s course covering throwing, trimming, handbuilding, and glazing. Join if you’d like to learn/develop a new craft while building community in London.

When: 6 Thursday evenings from 24th Sept, 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM (2.5 hrs)

Includes an optional social after class
