![Subject: Concerns Regarding Canada-UAE Joint Statement and Territorial Sovereignty
Dear Member of Parliament,
I am writing as a constituent to express my deep concern regarding the diplomatic language used by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government in the joint statement accompanying the Canada-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Canada must remain unyielding in its opposition to the Islamic Republic and continue to view our relations with Iran through a strict human rights lens, standing firmly with the Iranian people against their oppressive regime. However, opposing the regime should never mean bargaining away the sovereign territory of the Iranian nation to secure a commercial trade deal.
By taking a side in the Persian Gulf islands dispute (Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb) to finalize a trade agreement, the government has set a dangerous precedent. It conflates the temporary regime with the permanent sovereignty of the Iranian state, deeply alienating the Iranian-Canadian diaspora who fight for both human rights and their homeland’s integrity.
As my representative, I request that you urge the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to:
1- Maintain a strict human rights-first approach toward the Islamic Republic without compromising Iran’s long-term national sovereignty.
2- Commit to separating future trade negotiations from unrelated, sensitive geopolitical disputes.
3- Engage with the Iranian-Canadian community to address the distress this transactional language has caused.
Thank you for your attention to this vital foreign policy matter. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
