You’ve taken the same teacher certification exam FIVE times, spent money on study guides, flashcards, tutoring, and boot camps, and you’re STILL trying to figure out what needs to change before attempt number six. 😩

I recently talked to a teacher in Michigan who has taken the MTTC 119 Math exam five times.

Her scores? 193, 188, 205, 188, and 205.

Here’s what I noticed when I passed 3 teacher certification exams in 24 days. 👇🏾

First, follow me @certifiedwithaaralyn because I’m spilling the tea on the test-taking strategies that helped me pass, and I now help teachers across all 50 states do the same. 🍵

One thing I started paying attention to was the reasoning behind the answer choices.

On the education-based questions I encountered, the strongest answers often prioritized students, used available data, addressed problems proactively, and reflected sound instructional practices.

Meanwhile, other answer choices sounded reasonable at first but were reactive, unnecessarily punitive, or skipped an important step in the situation.

I had to pay attention to what the question was ACTUALLY asking and whether the answer I wanted to choose made sense for that specific scenario.

Listen, you can know your educational theories, instructional strategies, classroom management techniques, and all the other content you’ve been studying, but you still have to know how to APPLY that knowledge when the exam puts four answer choices in front of you.

That’s a HUGE part of why I talk about exam strategy so much.

I remember watching that testing center clock count down and feeling anxious about whether I would have enough time to finish. I’ve experienced what it’s like to have to make decisions while that pressure is building.

Now imagine going into another certification exam attempt without ever examining how you interpret questions, compare answers, or respond when you start feeling unsure.

That’s the kind of thing I want you paying attention to BEFORE you sit for your next exam.

“THREE POINTS?! I was THAT close?!” 😭

You probably stared at your score report, replaying questions in your head and wondering which answers you should have changed.

Now you’re thinking about scheduling another attempt because surely you can make up those 3 points next time, right?

But being close to passing doesn’t automatically mean you’re prepared to pass your next attempt.
