April Bey’s works will be next week on our booth E15 at 1-54 London

Her work explores themes such as feminism, generational theory, post colonialism, futurism and surreal imaginaries. Her work also engages with Blerd culture (contraction of « black » and « nerd ») which refers to popular, geek and speculative culture as seen through Black perspectives.

@andiledyalvane at 193 Gallery Paris « Mémoire Matérielle » exhibition, until October 30th.

Andile Dyalvane (b. 1978, Ngobozana, Eastern Cape) is a South African ceramic artist based in Cape Town. For Mémoire Matérielle, he presents coil-built ceramic vessels that carry the imprint of amaXhosa ancestral knowledge. Clay—or umhlaba, meaning “Mother Earth”—connects his practice to the land, while the scarified, incised, and ruptured surfaces of his works evoke both the body and the marks through which cultural knowledge is transmitted. Beyond their function as vessels, these works become channels of communion and healing—forms in which clay itself enables a dialogue between the living and those who came before. Dyalvane co-founded Imiso Ceramics in 2005 and received a Special Mention at the 2022 LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize for Cornish Wall. His work is held in major institutional collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein; Design Museum Gent; the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum; and the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town. taken in 193 Gallery by @cesar.levy1

WHEN ART MEETS MUSIC 🎶

Tomorrow, Hassan Hajjaj’s “My Rock Stars” opens at the Musée de la musique – Philharmonie de Paris, with an original musical creation by Acid Arab.

Music has always been at the heart of Hassan Hajjaj’s universe. From Gnawa, reggae and dub to hip-hop and electronic music, sound runs through his images, his encounters and his visual language.

For My Rock Stars, photography and music come together as one experience. Hassan’s iconic portraits — featuring figures such as Billie Eilish, Madonna, Rachid Taha, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz, alongside Gnawa musicians — enter into dialogue with a new soundtrack created especially for the exhibition by Acid Arab.

Blending North African and Middle Eastern musical traditions with electronic rhythms and global club culture, Acid Arab’s sound extends Hassan’s visual world beyond the image.

A dialogue between image and sound, portrait and rhythm, art and music — and a celebration of cultures that constantly meet, mix and reinvent themselves.

New exhibition at 193 Gallery « Mémoire Matérielle » curated by @azubogu and Nkhensani Mkhari

Bringing together works by Gaëlle Choisne, Joana Choumali, Andile Dyalvane and Carla Gueye, Mémoire Matérielle takes its point of departure from Paulette Nardal’s proposition that consciousness is not inherited passively, but constructed through deliberate effort, built collectively, and transmitted against the grain of erasure. The exhibition extends this conviction “into the field of artistic practice, gathering five artists for whom the hand—patient, repetitive, exacting—is the primary instrument of that construction.

Opening on September, 5th

César Levy discusses leaving a decade in strategic consulting to found 193 Gallery, explaining how economic intelligence training shapes his business approach while artistic decisions remain guided by a mission to decentralize the art world's Eurocentric narrative and champion underrepresented voices from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia.

193 Gallery is thrilled to present Sesse Elangwe’s first solo exhibition in Venice « The Road », from July 9th to September 12th.

The Road explores life as an ever-evolving journey, using the road as a metaphor for the human experience. More than a physical path, the road becomes a conceptual space where trust, transformation, uncertainty, personal aspirations, encounters, and challenges intersect. Rather than depicting roads literally, Sesse Elangwe develops a symbolic visual language through figures, landscapes, and recurring motifs that reflect the complexity of navigating an ever-changing world.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a reflection on the future and on the responsibility of the present generation toward those who will come after. Drawing from his own experience as a father, Elangwe addresses the profound transformations brought about by technological progress, particularly the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. While recognizing AI as a powerful tool, the artist questions its impact on human life, expressing concern over a future in which automation increasingly replaces traditional forms of work and reshapes the way people relate to one another. His wife and children become recurring references through which he imagines the challenges the next generation will face and asks how technology can be developed to expand, rather than limit, human potential.

Throughout these works, trees and lush greenery symbolize growth, hope, and the importance of maintaining a deep connection with nature in an increasingly digital world. In contrast, recurring red elements—often appearing as hair or visual accents—act as warning signs. Simultaneously evoking love and danger, they point to the risks of technological progress when left unchecked, while emphasizing the need to raise future generations with values that allow innovation and humanity to coexist. taken in Venice, Italy by @cesar.levy1
