Our brains love a binary… Light & dark. Big & small. Hot & cold. Strong & weak. Yin & Yang. You get the picture. It makes things easy for us. And marketeers love to use them as easy ways to promote debate. “White” food stuffs are often demonised in the media. And a lot of athletes will tell me “white bread is so bad for you”… Because of a newspaper article comparing white and brown bread for your health. Context and nuance are fundamental when it comes to nutrition. White = performance. Brown = health. Both good and both bad in differing contexts. Want more helpful context breakdowns? The carb revolution is in full swing. But is chasing pro-level carb intake a smart move for most of us? Every week, a new g/hr record drops - some athletes now claiming over 200g/hr… 🤯 Naturally, more and more amateurs are trying to follow suit. But most of us aren’t pros. 
The way they train, race, and recover is a very different game. And copying without context can backfire. I’ve seen athletes push carb intake too far, thinking “more must be better.” Sometimes, it does nothing (except drain your wallet).
 Other times? It ends in a very unpleasant mess… 💩 Very high-carb fuelling can be great, but only when it matches your actual needs. So what should you know? 👉 Pros burn 1,000–1,500 kcal/hr in long, back-to-back sessions.
👉 Most amateurs? More like 400–800 kcal/hr, often packed into weekends.
👉 Pros fuel to support sustained energy balance over multi-day loads. Can be a very different fuelling equation. More carbs can = more gut stress.
You can’t throw big g/hr+ at your body and expect smooth sailing. 
Tolerance takes time.
Push too far, too fast = Race-day 💩 What the science says: Research (Jeukendrup, 2017) shows performance gains plateau around ~90g/hr in endurance events. 
Unless your energy demand justifies more, pushing past that might not help - and could hurt. So what to do? Personalised fuelling. Fuel for your training, your body and your goals. Most will perform and recover brilliantly on 60–100g/hr. If you feel like you need more? Great. Just build up to it, test it, and track the outcome. Don’t just aim to fuel like a pro because it’s trendy.

But after years of coaching and experiencing his own challenges with performance he started to realise that the physical side was only part of the picture. He began noticing that his clients weren’t always held back by their training. Sometimes, it was what was happening in their head. So rather than abandoning what he already knew, Joe integrated mental performance coaching into his existing practice. That changed the way he coached. Because when you understand the mind, you can start working on what’s actually driving the behaviour not just what’s happening on the surface. Another @hauteroutefrance done ❤️ 7 riders I’ve the honour of working with on a 1:1 basis all safely home to Thonon Les Bains. 7 stages. 800km. 20k metres of climbing. Only one (minor) shower 🌧️… I’ve also had the pleasure of consulting and writing plans for a fair few more awesome folk, making this the biggest @ceyresteperformance squad at an Haute Route to date 🙌 It’s magic to share in the ups and downs with the people you work with on a daily basis and knowing how far some have come to even start is inspirational. Some have overcome serious accidents, injury, sickness, previous disappointments to all be here and do one of the worlds toughest events. These experiences are completely AI proof and people make the world go round. @hauteroutefrance day 3. 140km. 3500m. Cuneo 🇮🇹 to Briancon 🇫🇷 The col d’Agnel is my new favourite beast - the perfect flavour of disgusting gradients and beautiful views. Spent the day riding with (almost) all of the guys and girls I have the pleasure of having supported in the prep for this week over the last months and years. Helmet hair to rival @tadejpogacar ?… #hauteroute by @ceyresteperformance
Day 1 was a big one: 180km. 4000+. Nice to Cuneo. Lightest training volume I’ve ever done in prep for this event and although it always amazes me what the body can do, I felt it last couple of KMs of the Lombarde 😅. Had a smile on the face 98% of the time though. Brilliant to spend the day with @ajeukendrup Some super rides by the @ceyresteperformance squad. And of course, can’t go to Italy without 🍕 Do it all again in a few hours… @hauteroutefrance #hauteroute by @ceyresteperformance
