More than two decades of experience, leadership, and commitment have led to this moment. Justin Miller has been promoted to Battalion Chief.

Chief Miller joined Charlotte Fire in 2003 at just 19 years old and has spent his career developing firefighters, strengthening crews, and helping prepare our members for the challenges of the job.

Sunday evening, companies were dispatched to a structure fire in a strip mall. Ladder 27 arrived on scene with fire showing from a storefront. BC2 assumed command, Engine 27 was the second arriving engine and pulled a second attack line, Ladder 27’s crew searched. Captain Justin Miller has spent more than 23 years with Charlotte Fire, but experience has never allowed him to forget what an emergency feels like to the person calling for help.

“For most people, in that time, that is the worst day of their life.”

That perspective has helped define Miller as a firefighter, a captain and a leader. From the 19-year-old rookie who first arrived at Firehouse 27 in 2003 to the officer now helping train, mentor and prepare the firefighters coming behind him, his career has been built around service to others and investment in his people.

Now, Captain Miller has been named Charlotte Fire Officer of the Year.

Firehouse 27 responded to a working fire early this morning on Haywain Ct. Engine 34 arrived with fire through the roof of a 2 story house. Engine 27 brought the water and assisted with suppression efforts. Ladder 27 searched and opened up. THE SHIELD IS EARNED. 🃏🔥

Congrats are in order for FF I T. Moore on officially earning his 27 shield.

At 27, the shield is more than just a number—it means you’re one of us. Earning it requires completing a task list that represents what working at 27 is all about: fires, GSW, CPR, Narcan administrations, a station project, and a presentation.

Moore didn’t waste any time. He knocked out the majority of his list in his first two shifts.

Since arriving, he’s proven to be a great asset to Engine 27 and Station 27 as a whole. He came ready to work, jumped right into the action, and earned his place among the Wildcards.

Congrats, kid. You earned it. Welcome to 27. 🃏

HOUSE BY HOUSE | BATTALION 2

House by House continues with Battalion 2, covering 46.52 square miles northeast of center city.

Firehouses 27, 31, 34, 35 and 36 make up the battalion, with Battalion Chief 2 responding from Firehouse 27. The area is anchored by UNC Charlotte and includes portions of University City, with Interstate 85, Interstate 485, W.T. Harris Boulevard and University City Boulevard serving as its main corridors.

Our first stop is Firehouse 27, known as the “Wildcards.”

During the 1990s, northeast Charlotte experienced significant growth around UNC Charlotte. Engine 27 had already been placed in service at Firehouse 22 in 1989, before Firehouse 27 opened in 1991 to better serve the expanding area.

Firehouse 27 currently houses Engine 27, Ladder 27 and Battalion Chief 2.

Its 6.99-square-mile response area includes the University City and Autumnwood neighborhoods, serving more than 32,000 residents and 11,541 households along the W.T. Harris Boulevard and North Tryon Street corridors.

UNC Charlotte presents one of the firehouse’s largest and most complex response challenges, with more than 31,000 students on campus. The area also includes Atrium Health University, University Research Park, IKEA and the Wells Fargo Customer Information Center.

The LYNX Blue Line also travels through the response area on elevated tracks and through the only underground rail section in the city.

During fiscal year 2025, crews from Firehouse 27 responded to nearly 10,000 incidents.

Yesterday afternoon, companies responded to I-485 Outer Loop exit ramp to N Tryon St for an MVA. E-35 arrived to find a truck overturned over the embankment with 3 priority patients ejected. L27’s crew assisted with moving patients to the off ramp, BC2 assumed command. MEDIC declared 1 fatality and transported 2 others with life threatening injuries. This morning, companies were dispatched to Robert D Snyder Dr for smoke inside of a hotel. Crews arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the roof. BC2 assumed command, L27’s crew made the 7th floor and encountered heavy smoke conditions. E27’s crew connected to the standpipe on floor 6 and stretched 2 1/2” hose. BC2 struck a 2nd alarm due to manpower intensive firegound operations.
