EP 69: The Instrument Must Not Matter (with CHRISTINE FISCHER GUY)
———————- 🎹————————-

“Music can’t be contained, it can’t be smothered, it can’t be eliminated”
—Christine Fischer Guy

Christine Fischer Guy (@cfischerguy) is a Toronto-based novelist, educator, and award-winning journalist, whose work has appeared in publications across North America and England. Her second novel—The Instrument Must Not Matter—is a coming-of-age story about a remarkably gifted young pianist—Lila Rys—who moves from Toronto to New York City to study piano. The move results in a journey of self discovery, creative breakthrough, and the unearthing of historical family trauma.

So, this happened: a full-page review of The Instrument Must Not Matter in the National Post. When a critic gets you, it’s an out-of-body experience.

In this highly distilled meditation on non-permanence and dislocation, @lauriedgraham chronicles her search through objects and documents left behind as she tries to reconstruct the lives of her great grandmothers. The book is testament to the longing for something too far out of reach that she would have to “work/the rest of my life” to call back, “and I’m too late.” Beautiful, spare, precise, and wise.

What wonderful news to wake up to! Anne Carson won the Nobel. I loved this passage from Autobiography of Red so much for what it says about becoming. It’s the epigraph for #theinstrumentmustnotmatter

Had a wonderful conversation today with author @cfischerguy about her novel, The Instrument Must Not Matter (published by @wolsakandwynn) - a fascinating coming of age story about a gifted classical pianist named Lila Rys.

The episode launches next Wednesday - just enough time for you to read the book! 📖

It’s a good sign if I feel a bit bereft after I finish reading a novel, because it means I miss its company. @liz.d.s.johnston ‘s The Fall-Down Effect left me feeling that way. Fortunately, the sibling trio of Fern, River, and Sylvia, each passionate about trees and fighting for the environment in their own way, will stay with me for a long time. I admired the way the book showed the ripple effect of a family rupture, too, the way the past is never really past.
