VINYL ON VINYL ALT ART 2026

JOSEPH GANDIONGCO

In this series, the artist reflects on his goals and ambitions. Pipe Dreams is about the feeling when dreams fade. It’s the slow realization that some goals don’t work out, no matter the effort invested.

The artworks reflect acceptance, not failure. Letting go is quiet. Giving up isn’t sudden or dramatic. It’s gradual, personal, and sometimes necessary. It is about choosing rest, change, or survival over forcing what doesn’t work at the moment.

The works depict spaces, moments, and objects that happen in between continuing and giving up, where disappointment gives way to clarity. Pipe Dreams invites viewers to reflect on the dreams they’ve outgrown, the ones they’ve had to leave behind, and what comes after letting go.

ALT ART 2026 is presented by the ALT Collective, in partnership with BDO Private Banking, and co-presented by Nagaraya

Supported by The Friends of ALT, Boysen, Samsung, The Moment Group, Terry’s Bistro, Arc Gin, Savea Bay City Manila, Lifestyle Asia, BluPrint, and Lifestyle.INQ

Filling Empty Spaces
Joseph Gandiongco and Gelo Montiero

Emptiness is both a physical and emotional presence. The vacant spaces in our homes, the voids expanding within our bodies, and the things we have missed in our lives—we are continuously shaped by what is not there. In this collaborative exhibition by Joseph Gandiongco and Gelo Montiero, the artists explore our relationship with absence—how we react to what is lacking, how we attempt to fill it, and how we learn to live with what cannot be filled. Foregrounding the tension between presence and absence, the artists invite us to sit within emptiness, not only to endure its discomfort, but to also recognize it as a space that can hold memory, feeling, and possibility.

Joseph and Gelo’s practices meet through space and structure, giving shape to worlds and emotions that are otherwise difficult to grasp. Inspired by Gelo’s use of color, Joseph works with darker backgrounds and softened edges, allowing lines to occupy and disrupt the space. These lines often interfere with the main subject, drawing attention away from it and forcing an alternative way of seeing and interpreting the work. In some pieces, Joseph removes the central subject entirely, leaving only traces for the audience to wonder: What’s missing?

In turn, Gelo draws from Joseph’s structured approach, translating it into works with greater negative space and more immersive environments around his subjects. These elements construct intimate worlds heightened by self-awareness. Together, their exchange is less an attempt to reconcile their differences, but opens an opportunity for each approach to challenge, expand, and reshape the other.

At its core, Filling Empty Spaces examines our instinct to react to emptiness. Do we flinch from the void, rush to fill it, or allow ourselves to remain within it? The works invite us to consider whether every absence needs to be resolved, or whether some spaces can simply be carried. We all have our own versions of emptiness, shaped by loss, longing, or change. Sometimes, the emptiness gets filled. Sometimes, we simply learn to live alongside it.
