In this painting I am wearing a Hat from the Bamileke people of Cameroon Grasslands. Hats are part of prestigious regalia in the Cameroon grasslands. They are worn during special ceremonies.

📣 FACULTY ANNOUNCEMENT 📣

Charles G. Esperanza is the second of six cool kids. The South Bronx is where he first opened his eyelids. A dope land shrouded in bright-colored decay, the home of graffiti and hip-hop DJs! He paints funky elephants! Bodegas too! Mixed with this wonder is some whimsical truth. Charles has a voice that is seldom heard. A fusion of jazz, distorted guitars, and chirping birds.

The stars of Fish Fry Friday and Soul Food Sunday came together today at the Society of Illustrators to celebrate our painting being selected to display in the amazing Original Art Show! This show highlights some of the best artwork from picturebooks released in 2025!

My nephew Nolan, who will one day be a scientist/engineer/astronaut first starred in Soul Food Sunday with My mother the soulful Bronx Boricua Lydia Esperanza when he was 3! A few years later, they both revisited their roles as grandma and Grandson in this amazing series written by Winsome Bingham (@armyvetfive) But this time, instead of preparing greens and macaroni, they frying Catfish and Hushpuppies!

(I promise my mom was taller than Nolan when I took my reference photos almost 2 years ago😂)

Thank you to the amazing staff, judges and curators at @soi128 for selecting this book that was truly made with love! by @cgesperanza

Wishing a very Happy Birthday to Jean-Michel Basquiat on what would've been his 65th Birthday. I recreated his NY Times magazine cover from 1985 as a tribute. As a fellow Puerto Rican, West indian artist from NYC, I've been inspired by Jean's confidence, originality and willingness to challenge the status quo for many years.

Also a sneak peak at my new mural painting in the background!😉 more pics coming soon! by @cgesperanza

Gaynor welcomed author and illustrator C.G. Esperanza to campus on Monday for a visit in advance of the Book Fair next week! Esperanza held two assemblies for our students to talk about what being a picture book author and illustrator is like, and answer some student questions. He also dropped by the Blue Cluster art class to host a picture book workshop! Students split into two groups, and collaborated on creating a picture book which they then presented to the rest of the class. Thank you to C.G. for visiting and showing your amazing art to our students! Read more about his visit at the link in our bio. 🐊🎨 #lifeatgaynor by @cgesperanza
