2023 IFSC Bouldering World Cup - Hachioji, Japan

Select moments of routesetting compared with competition from the first event of the season. Similarities. Differences. Climbers expressing themselves.

Lots of folks had questions about this event: decision making, considerations, athlete level, thoughts on the round, some moves, certain boulders. Happy to field questions, but know that no matter the feelings or results, we always try our best. 素晴らしい一週間をありがとうございました 🫶🏼 taken in Hachioji, Tokyo by @cgrodzki

You know what grade you climb. But do you know what’s actually holding you back from the next one?

I built ClimbIQ to help answer that.

It’s a free 20-question assessment that takes about 3 minutes and looks at 5 areas of your climbing:

• Mental
• Power
• Strength
• Movement
• Endurance

At the end, you’ll get a breakdown of where you’re strong, where you’re leaving some room for improvement, and what might be worth focusing on in your training.

No signup. No cost. Just useful feedback.

Take it, send it to your climbing partners, and compare your scores.

Lot of folks were wondering what the highlight bloc from my last reel turned out to be. Pretty committing coordo to classic climbing. Commitment over fear and lots of attempts to learn! 👻 I think the hand-jam dead point to the last move was spookier than the rocket re-direct to the no-tex, but that’s just me. What does the process of a boulder reset look like? Take a look behind the scenes for a day at @boulder_union 🏛️. How long do you think it takes? Wait til the end for the total time spent 🕰️
—————

It can catch some climbers unaware as to how much straight up labor goes into resetting new terrain, but given the right set of conditions, it is a labor of love, inspiration, creativity, and enjoyment. Support your local routesetters 🛠️

—————

How long do you think it takes to set up the zone, strip the walls, bring the holds to the washroom, wash the walls, set a high-level highlight bloc, test it, and clean up the setting zone? The answer might surprise you. Wait til the end for the total time spent 🕰️ taken in Boulder Union by @cgrodzki

Drew and I hit the ground running on very little sleep. But Morocco is beautiful and has an energetic vibe that overcomes “jet lag”. For Drew, as Director of Setting for the inSPIRE Rock gyms, growing, learning and honing his setting skills for the inSPIRE climbing community is the name of the game. IFSC/USAC Setter, Cody sharing his international experience with this diverse group of setters is priceless. We have setters from Atlas Elevation (Morocco’s first and only climbing gym), the United States, Great Britain and Germany. Seeing these men and women connect instantly through climbing is a beautiful thing. @atlaselevation @cgrodzki @inspirerockspring @inspire_routesetting #climbing #routesetting #climbinggym taken in Marrakech, Morocco by @cgrodzki
