For the last few months, I had the privilege of documenting two extraordinary Black women artists, Chayse Sampy and Morgan Newton — their creative processes, their families, and their friendship.
•
I became privy to how these two artists alchemized their familial archives and different schools of Black thought into breathtaking artwork. From them, I learned the importance of ownership over the narratives told about us as Black people.
•
I learned so much creating this film — from shooting to post-production. Every single person involved was a steward to what started as merely an idea in my head — and I’m forever grateful.
•

Overwhelmed with gratitude.

To receive this grant from Austin Film Society, and to be in such talented company, means the world to me. Thank you to AFS, for believing in this film. I’m so proud of this new work and deeply thankful to be creating alongside people I get to call friends, and to be in community with truly magical humans who continue to keep the legacy of Ballroom alive.
•
Every message, every congratulations, every ounce of support has been incredibly heart-warming. This recognition feels like real validation—a quiet but powerful yes—that I’m moving in alignment, making the right choices, and trusting myself.

It’s not lost on me that my grief is only this vast because the love between my Nana and I was even vaster. Her love for me shaped the horizon of my life. We completed our circles with each other — she greeted my first breath, and I cradled her as she released her last — a month ago today.
•
Since November 10th, I feel like I’ve been living inside the echo of a single day. The world has continued to spin, but I roam around feeling like my soul is looking for hers.
•
Part of me knows she loved me before she ever knew my name, before she even saw my face. And I keep her last words in my heart — soft-spoken but I knew how loudly her heart meant them.
•
Being by her side every step of her journey home was a gift I didn’t know she would leave me. Being her pallbearer was one of the hardest things I’ll ever do — but it was an honor.
•
This is something I will never “get over.” I will miss my Nana every day for the rest of my life, but it is the biggest gift to know that she loved me for the entirety of hers. by @ch.ann.ing
