Osprey

Diving at terminal velocity ~80 mph

When Ospreys dive, they will accelerate from a relatively slower to a much faster speed. The terminal velocity right before they hit the water surface is about 80 mph which is the moment of the maximum acceleration!!

That means, at the very last stage of their diving, the diving speed is at 117 feet / second drop or 6 feet / frame drop (with a camera which has 20 frames/second)!!

This picture was taken while the photographer was able to follow the whole diving process and captured both the very last moment and the exact dive-into-location!!

Peregrine Falcon

Very early in the morning, he just flying across the long side of a gigantic cliff… right at the moment of his landing approach towards his favorite tree branch. Usually that’s where he would perch to wait for his counterpart (a young immature and capable female) and his breakfast, if he is lucky! Very unusual situation!

Peregrine Falcon — Breakfast in the Air

Recently, he (banded name: 78 BZ) and his counterpart are having their own breakfast individually very early in the morning may be due to the pre-summer hot weather! Also, they each have their food storage locations.

For an unknown reason, he flew back and forth at least half dozen times between the old nest and far end of the cliff today! Maybe he was looking for his counterpart, a young immature lady, who was not in sight that morning!

This picture was taken while he did a knife edge inflight in one of those circling loops where he could not help not to finish up his breakfast and was trying to get several bits in the air!

It looked funny that he left one big white feather to show off his big prey!

Peregrine Falcon Couple

It was such a pleasant surprise to encounter this matting event in such a late season!

We didn’t think there will be any babies since she is too young. They are the new residents of this gigantic cliff and only became a couple just about few weeks. It was she, a very capable young lady, who flew out to hunt and share meals with him especially lately. It is counterintuitive to our experiences that one would expect the opposite.

No matter what we were excited about the situation since the disappearances of both the two-year male resident and his counterpart (73CD) not too long ago.

Black-crowned Night Herons
“Having a Great Joy and Fun with Each Other”

It was a beautiful late afternoon, there were about six Black- crowned Night Herons plus two Great Blue Herons, several very aggressive Herring Gulls, and a group of Cormorants, all scattered at various spots, either perched on tree branches or standing right by the bank of a pond and a fish ladder waiting to capture the passing through Alewife / Herring fish.

These two Black-crowned Night Herons who had been standing together at the bank of the pond for at least an hour without catching any Alewife passing through!

Later, they became more anxious and had turned around towards different angles several times since the adjacent GBH had caught and swallowed three Alewife’s already!

This snapshot was taken while they were trying to squeeze good ideas out from each other given the GBH had already flown away! Therefore, no more opportunities to consult the more skillful one anymore!

Peregrine Falcon — Inverted with a Blue Jay （none AI)

There was no gusty wind, no harsh sunlight, no other raptors or birds in sight… this male Peregrine Falcon was flying inverted and rolled with a Blue Jay in captivity!

It was so unusual, we as his daily fans were excited and curious and felt little odd and worried when seeing his flying pattern and behavior!

Everything happened in split seconds, under his high speed flying, we could not even tell there was a prey until we saw the images inside of the camera.

Wow, it was one of a kind flying! He must felt the same way about things which stimulated him to behave differently and to make announcements showing and sharing his emotions using a special action to get the world’s attention!

Bald Eagle — Immature Female

It was a beautiful sunny day morning, we went to visit her counterpart KZ who has been an old friend and we have not seen recently. However, instead of seeing KZ, we met her for the very first time. Due to two unexpected incidents, KZ lost two counterparts in three years and she has become KZ’s third counterpart in the recent past!

This encounter was such a pleasant surprise. She perched at a branch on “The Tree”, a favorite tree for KZ and his counterparts. This snapshot was taken while she decided to fly to a different spot in waiting for KZ.

Peregrine Falcon

He lives happily with his counterpart in a gigantic surburban cliff in a residential and industrial neighborhood! - -

Normally he would bring in the breakfast early in the morning and eat first himself and provide and share the leftover with his counterpart. There was no exception today, he was a little late and was rushing to defeater and wanted to get the breakfast ready as soon as possible for both of them. -

Peregrine Falcon

In a cloudy early morning, after finished eating his breakfast on a high utility post top, this male Peregrine Falcon was rushing to deliver the leftover to his counterpart who was waiting at a big tree branch in middle of a gigantic cliff situated in a residential/ commercial suburban neighborhood.

As a new routine, he would drop off the food into an old Raven’s nest, one could treat it as an action regarding either a food exchange or storage. His young immature partner always knew to pickup her share from that nest.

This picture was taken while this male peregrine was flying towards that old Raven’s nest!

Peregrine Falcons: “CAN WE SHARE?”

This young and immature female peregrine Falcon was approaching to her newly accepted male partner for sharing breakfast! They currently settle at a gigantic cliff in a surburban commercial / residential area!

Most of the time, it was the male who brought back the breakfast and ate himself first and then delivered to an old Raven’s nest to share with his young female counterpart! She always knew and would look for her share inside of that nest and either ate inside or outside on her breakfast table which is an adjacent utility pole top.

It happened rarely, while this picture was taken, that he was so generously and wanted to share the breakfast by turning the prey towards her and welcome her participation; otherwise/ nominally, he would bring the prey and fly away long before she arrives!
