It’s finally becoming real. I’m Bumi Cha, the illustrator for the BCBF 2026 Visual Identity.

It’s surreal to see my work featured across all the official platforms. Every time I see my illustrations online, I feel a mix of nerves and excitement. My heart races every time I come across them, so I even find it hard to open Instagram lately. However, as much as I worked hard on this, I feel deeply proud and simply happy. Truly. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has believed in me. It is an honor to work with the incredible team at Chialab.

드디어 현실로 다가왔어요. 저는 BCBF 2026 비주얼 아이덴티티 작업을 한 일러스트레이터 차부미입니다.
제 그림이 모든 공식 플랫폼에 소개되는 것을 보니 정말 꿈만 같네요. 온라인에서 제 일러스트를 볼 때마다 설레기도 하지만, 긴장도 돼요. 사실 너무 떨려서 요즘은 인스타그램을 자주 열어보지도 않았답니다. 하지만 이 프로젝트를 위해 정말 열심히 노력했고, 그 결실을 맺게 된 게 너무나 감격스럽고 행복합니다. 진심으로요. 저를 믿어주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다. 최고의 팀 Chialab과 함께 작업하게 되어 영광이었습니다.

It's been a while. I hope you are doing well. I watched a few fun movies and spent a quiet time listening to my favorite playlist. 🙃

The wind got pretty chilly, so I pulled out some long sleeves yesterday. It feels like my favorite season is almost here. Take care not to catch a cold with the weather changing.

모두들 오랜만이에요. 잘 지내고 계셨길 바랍니다. 저는 그동안 몇 편의 재미있는 영화를 보고, 좋아하는 음악 플레이리스트를 들으면서 조용하게 지냈습니다. 🙃

세상엔 재미있는 책이 너무나 많네요. 어제 그리고 오늘, <서울 제대로 도서전>에서 저는 다양한 책들과 만났고, 비밀스런 이야기가 가득한 강연도 진행하고 왔습니다.

2026년 볼로냐 아동 도서전(BCBF)의 비주얼 아이덴티티가 완성되기까지의 비하인드 스토리를 나누는 강연이었습니다. 작업 과정과 아카이브 기록을 함께 살펴보며, ’얼굴‘이라는 주제 속에 담긴 ’다양성과 만남‘의 메시지를 되짚어 보았습니다.

비주얼 아이덴티티 작업에 대해 소개하는 자리가 한국에서는 처음이라 더욱 뜻깊었고, 행복한 시간이었습니다.

귀중한 시간 내어 자리해주신 분들께 진심으로 감사드리며, 이렇게 멋진 자리를 마련해주신 #서울제대로도서전 관계자분들께도 감사드립니다.

오늘 저의 강연은 이 세상의 모든 예술가들을 향한 무한한 응원과 사랑을 고백하며 끝났습니다. 너한테두 작은 음악가 내 동생.

사람들에게 힘을 주고 오고 싶었는데, 오히려 제가 더 많은 힘을 받아 가네요. 앞으로도 더 열심히 노력하겠습니다.

There are just so many interesting books in the world. Today at the <Seoul Real Bookfair>, I came across so many fun books that made me burst out laughing, and I also got to deliver a special lecture filled with behind-the-scenes stories.

This lecture was a special opportunity to share the behind-the-scenes story of how the visual identity for the 2026 Bologna Children's Book Fair (BCBF) came to life. Looking through the work logs and archival records, we reflected on the message of "diversity and encounters" embedded within the theme of "faces."

It was a profound honor and a great joy to present and discuss this visual identity project in South Korea for the very first time.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who took the time to attend, as well as the book fair organizers for making this wonderful event possible.

Today's lecture concluded with a love letter to all the artists in this world. And of course, to you, my little musician.

I had hoped to bring encouragement to others, but instead, I walked away with so much energy and strength from everyone. I will continue to work even harder moving forward. taken in 노들섬 - Nodeul Island by @cha_bumi

Together, we shared pieces of the matrix and created new faces, which led to some wonderful and unexpected moments. Someone’s face caught a cold, another went for a stroll in a garden, and one face was so deeply moved by a book that it ended up shedding tears. The face I made winked at us and said “Hi!”.

우리는 매트릭스 조각을 나눠 가지며 새로운 얼굴을 만들어냈고, 재미있는 일이 일어났습니다. 누군가의 얼굴은 감기에 걸렸고, 누군가의 얼굴은 정원을 산책했고, 누군가의 얼굴은 책을 읽고 너무나 큰 감동을 받아서 펑펑 눈물을 흘려 버렸습니다. 제가 만든 얼굴은 윙크를 하며 우리를 향해 “안녕!” 하고 소리쳤습니다.

I am so excited to open a workshop in Shanghai this week on May 29th. I’ve worked hard to prepare for this, and I truly hope everyone has a wonderful and enjoyable time.

[SIPS 2026 — ISC Workshop]
형태의 해체: 모듈형 초상화의 예술 (Deconstructing Forms: The Art of Modular Portraiture)

Tutor: Bumi Cha (South Korea), Illustrator

Language: Consecutive translation in Korean and Chinese provided

Participants: Up to 24 young illustrators

Themes: Drawing / Visual Identity / Visual Deconstruction

Overview:
This is a technical workshop focusing on the stages of building an institutional visual identity. Through portraiture studies and the deconstruction of forms, participants will learn how to develop scalable visual patterns and modular characters, exploring the very approach used for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair (BCBF).

비주얼 아이덴티티를 구축하는 단계들을 다루는 기술적인 워크숍입니다. 초상화 연구와 형태의 해체 과정을 통해, 참가자들은 확장 가능한 시각적 패턴과 모듈형 캐릭터를 개발하는 방법을 배웁니다. 이와 함께 볼로냐 아동 도서전(BCBF)의 비주얼 아이덴티티 작업에 실제로 사용되었던 접근 방식과 과정을 함께 살펴봅니다

Here are the photos from our final day in Bologna and a few I forgot to post.
Thank you so much to everyone who liked my posters.
I’m so glad I got to meet you all, and seeing my wonderful friends again was a highlight. I loved the unexpected encounters, too: finding a 'little jungle' in the city and seeing a painting hanging in a small bookstore by the road.

제 포스터를 좋아해 주신 분들께도 감사드리고, 만나 뵙게 돼서 반가웠습니다. 얼마나 멋진 사람들인지 알기 때문에 그분들과 한 번 더 만날 수 있었던 것도 반가웠고, 우연히 마주친 작은 정글과, 길가 작은 서점에 걸려 있던 그림과의 만남도 반가웠어요. 또 봐요.

With love, I dedicate this day to every child.

As someone who was once a child, remains a child at heart, and will one day become a parent, I feel a deep sense of duty to listen to the vulnerable and to act with courage. Yet, I feel a sense of powerlessness and regret for only being able to send my voice from afar. I will give it my all in any way I can. I’m glad if I could contribute in some small way.

It was a truly moving experience to deliver the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Korean a message that is needed now more than ever. My sincere thanks to UNICEF for inviting me to 'The Convention on the Rights of the Child: A Reading from a Child’s Perspective.'

사랑을 담아 모든 아이들에게 오늘 하루를 바칩니다.

이전에 아이였고, 모두가 그렇듯 영원히 아이이자, 어쩌면 언젠가는 부모가 될 사람으로서 도움이 필요한 목소리에 귀 기울이고 용감히 행동해야 한다는 사명감을 느낍니다. 하지만 한편으로는 먼발치에서 작게 목소리만 보내는 스스로의 부족함이 죄송스럽습니다. 어떤 방식으로든 제가 할 수 있는 모든 노력을 다하겠습니다. 아주 아주 아주 작게나마 도움이 되었다면 그것만으로도 제게는 큰 기쁨일 겁니다.

지금 그 어느 때보다 필요한 메시지인 '아동 권리 협약'을 한국어로 전할 수 있었던 것은 제게 정말 감동적인 경험이었습니다. 유니세프 주최 '아동 권리 협약: 어린이의 시각으로 본 낭독회'에 초대해 주셔서 진심으로 감사합니다. by @cha_bumi

I’m back to my daily life now. It feels like waking up from a long dream, but the pinch on my cheek tells me it was all real.
It was an honor to spend such unforgettable time with all of you. Whether planned or by chance, I was so glad to meet you face to face.
Everything was possible thanks to you. I hope our paths cross again someday. No one knows what the future holds, but for now, I couldn't be happier.

A special thanks to the people in this video, but also a huge thank you to everyone behind the scenes. I'm more thankful than words can say.

저는 이제 다시 일상으로 돌아왔어요. 마치 긴 꿈을 꾸고 있는 것 같지만, 꼬집어본 볼이 아픈 걸 보니 현실이 맞겠네요.
평생 잊을 수 없는 시간을 여러분과 함께 보낼 수 있어 영광이었습니다. 계획한 만남이든, 뜻밖의 만남이든, 함께 얼굴을 마주할 수 있어 정말 반가웠어요.
이 모든 것이 이뤄질 수 있었던 건 전부 여러분 덕분이었습니다. 언젠가 우리 꼭 다시 만나요.
앞으로 어떤 일이 일어날지는 전혀 모르지만, 지금 이 순간만큼은 더할 나위 없이 행복합니다.

From 1:30 to 3:00 PM today, I had the honor of participating as a panelist in the BCBF Visual Identity Workshop at The Illustrators Survival Corner. It was a truly special moment. My deepest gratitude goes to the incredible Chialab team for this precious opportunity, for making this possible.
I still vividly remember last summer’s workshop. it feels like only yesterday we said our bittersweet goodbyes, yet here we are together again in the blink of an eye.

I was so surprised and happy to see such an incredible turnout! To those who joined us today, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Those who were in the front seat may have heard my heartbeat.

While I’m sorry I couldn't give a gift to everyone, I sincerely hope those who received my art enjoyed it. I will continue to draw with all my heart. Thank you all!

오늘 오후 1시 30분부터 3시까지, '일러스트레이터 서바이벌 코너'에서 BCBF 비주얼 아이덴티티 워크숍을 진행했습니다.
패널로 참여하게 되어 큰 영광이었고, 무엇보다 소중한 기회를 준 사랑하는 Chialab 팀 덕분에 무사히 마칠 수 있었습니다. 아직도 지난 여름의 워크숍이 생생하게 기억나요. 아쉬운 작별 인사를 했었지만, 눈 깜짝할 사이에 다시 만났네요.

예상보다 훨씬 많은 분이 자리를 가득 채워주셔서 깜짝 놀랐고, 정말 감사했습니다! 앞자리에 계셨던 분들은 제 심장소리를 들으셨을지도 모르겠네요.
