Last Saturday 01/04/2025, was one of the hardest days I’ve had and by far the hardest decision I’ve had to make in my life. What a ride and such a companion for the last 13 years. I’m still at a loss for words but damnit we had a good run and I just hope he would say the same thing if he could. Im gonna miss him so much and the personality and always there right by my side. RIP Lou, you will be extremely missed buddy. Give em hell up there. by @chaddembinski

We had 36 hours to hunt rare ground and world class bears. We were going to make the most of it; knowing in the back of our minds things might not go our way this time…

Well, this time it did!

Chad and I hit the road Monday morning and started looking at bears by Monday evening. At 5pm we watched a young bear do bear things and let him pass.

3am Tuesday morning we laced up our boots, burnt our mouths on coffee, and got winded by two big bears at 5am.

By 8:30 we chased another boar into a mountain of boulders with enough room for him to stay out our reach. Wedged into a cave, we were no more than 5 feet from him - often meeting his eyes - all of us knowing he had won, and at the same time, we had too. He was huge, old, and smart. The dogs did their jobs and so did the bear.

Later that afternoon, at 4:15, Chad was setting up on another bear. This time, we had everything lined up and with one clean shot, Chad put him down.

Grateful to Floyd and Shane for putting us on the ground. Grateful to Chad for being ready every step of the way. And grateful for these badass bears.

Here’s the quick video version of what happened today. Spotted this sweet buck two days ago at 750 and tried to close the distance. He dropped down into a drainage and we couldn’t turn him back up. Went back in the next morning and nothing. A couple small bucks that tempted us to make sure I didn’t go home empty handed but I held out. Day 3 1/2 we go back in again that morning. Go back to a higher glassing spot and I turn him up again. Finally! Well now he’s 1100 yards. There’s a lot of country between me and the buck and it’s Arizona, it’s hot. I talk @chaddembinski into staying on the glass and I’ll run over there. He says “what do you think 45min and you can get over there” (where I’d have what we thought to be a 500 yard shot)? I said “I’ll be there under 30.” Well 15min later I’m in range. Chad guides me into the buck right at the top of the ridge about to go into some trees. I briefly spot him in the binos and drop down to get the rifle on him. As soon as I get down Chad tells me he sees him go into the trees. He’s gone…Chad makes his way over to me as I pick apart where the buck disappeared. Nothing. Did he bed down in those trees or go over the hill and gone forever. We try to get under a bush of tree for some shade on the side of a steep mountain to glass mid day. I want to stay within range just in case the buck reappears. For over an hour we glass that hill side and all the new country below us. No bucks in sight. We start discussing an evening plan and maybe going back to where we were glassing in the morning or checking out a new area. Chad puts away the spotter, I start getting my stuff together. I take one more quick look free hand with the binos. He’s back out! Chad goes “what where!?” I quickly start getting my rifle and a rest setup on the side of this hill as I whisper yell “two trees left of where we last saw him.” I stack both of our packs and get laid down. Not as great of a rest as I’d like but Chad gives me my range and I dial for 360 yards. First shot is perfect. The buck kicks and starts walking to the trees with his head down. Chad: Put another one in him. Me: He’s gonna go down, but let me get back on him. Continued in comments 🙂 by @chaddembinski
